From a young age Makoto's rambunctious spirit thrived in the martial arts. Coming from a long line of decorated fighters she was set to be the greatest of them all. Her father spoiled his "little sun" perhaps a bit too much but loved her dearly. As the years went on she would overcome any challenge in her own...reckless way wedging a gap between her and her family. She was kicked out of the family dojo for refusing to stick to the firm techniques cultivated over generations favoring her "better" style and thus left Japan to study abroad.
A year after she left she received word that her father had passed away. Grief stricken she rushes home to find everyone carrying about as usual, preparing for the funeral ignoring that her father was set to compete in the next world tournament. He was going to bring attention back to their dying style by competing but no one else was ready to take his place. In a thunderous rage she proclaimed "I'll bring back honor to this dingy dojo and prove once and for all my way is superior!" stealing her father's old gi and storming out as furiously as she had arrived. Underneath the facade of an arrogant blowhard she's deeply hurt over the loss of her father but won't admit it. Her family views her act as impudent and shameful but her older brother understand that she means to honor her father.
Through no small effort Makoto rises through the ranks defeating newcomers and legends a like but with each victory smashing her once incredible ego to dust. Every punch thrown, every block broken has opened her eyes to how weak and unrefined she really is. The Brazilian beast Blanca was her last fight before facing Ryu in the finals. Instead of resting at Ryu's suggestion she rushes in only thirsting for the value of taking down one of the very best. Seconds were all it took Ryu to dispatch the rising star.
After regaining consciousness Ryu tells Makoto that he recognizes her father's style in her wild movements. He smiles warmly and regales her of when he met her father while studying under Master Gouken. "You bring honor to your father and I look forward to our next fight." are his last words before leaving to his next match.
Makoto returns home dreams crushed but spirit reborn. Ready to face her next challenge. Her brother welcomes her home and shows her the small renovations he's made to the dojo in her absence.
So this is the completed February monthly character illustration for Patreon. My patrons voted for Makoto from Street Fighter 3 and I decided to take this opportunity to study the characters root's and offer a bit of a re-design/re-write. I had originally came up with this sketch of Makoto VS Ryu but ultimately decided on something that felt more victorious for her ending art.
It was a fun experiment and I hope everyone enjoys the outcome. This wouldn't be possible without the contributions of my supporters and I'm eternally grateful.
