Based on the Scorpionfly, a bug that's not a scorpion nor a fly and that lives pretty much anywhere that isn't an island.

Another inspiration is the Grim reaper, which came from how Scorpionflies really like eating human cadavers somehow

Scortomb, The Tombstone Pokémon.

this one is based on Scorpionfly pupae, unlike most bugs that metamorphose, they don't form a Cacoon or Chrysalis, they instead just chill underground and grow into adults there, so a Tombstone made sense.

and at last a Scorpionfly larvae, which pretty much just look like weird caterpillar-thingies, they often have spikes so it made sense to make it look like the ribcage of some dead Pokémon.
