The Lamb Who Started A Cult

Share

WARNING, THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR CULT OF THE LAMB.

Just my take on Lambert's journey throughout the game.

The Lamb Who is Sent to Slaughter

Lambert wasn't usually one to question things or start fights.  They just went about their life as best they could.  So long as they had their friends and family, that's all they needed to be happy.

This however was not to be, as hordes of cultist of the old faith began raiding all villages and settlements in search of lambs, and slaughtering them along with others that would dare oppose them.   Lambert soon found themselves running for their life, but it was all in vain.  As time went on, all of Lambert's relatives were hunted down, and any friends they had soon dwindled either from being eliminated, or abandoning any ties with lamb kind.  Before they knew it, Lambert was bound in chains.  Dragged in front of the Four Bishops.  The leaders of the old faith, to be sacrificed in their name, and to seal away "The One Who Waits."  Lambert could nothing but cry and beg for their life, as the blade met their neck, and was suddenly silenced....

The Lamb Who Crusades

This however was not the end for Lambert.  As they opened their eyes, they found themselves in bright, but eerie place.  They wonder a short distance, before they see 3 figures.  2 smaller ones by the side of one large figure.  bound by several chains like Lambert was not long ago.  The lamb approached with caution and fear, as the giant figure spoke to him.  He calls himself "The One Who Waits."  Is this the being the bishops feared?  Was killing all lamb kind really their answer to keep him contained?  The One Who Waits offered Lambert a deal.  To be brought back to life in exchange for reviving his cult, and smiting all the bishops that dared to turn against him.  Lambert, filled with fear of being dead and forever alone in this bright abyss, and angry hate towards the bishops that killed them and all their kind, agreed.  With that, they were granted the Red Crown.  The source of the sealed god's power.  And with that, the lamb was reborn, and took swift revenge against the cultist that preformed their sacrifice.  After consulting the previous avatar of the Red Crown, Ratau, Lambert started their crusade against the Old Faith, in the name of The One Who Waits.

Throughout Lambert's crusade, they found several folk that were just like them.  Lost, alone, afraid, and sent to be sacrificed by the cultist of the Old faith.  Lambert remembers what Ratau told them about saving lost souls, so they would be obliged to join the cult.  While it is true things started this way early on when forging the cult, Lambert couldn't help but feel some kindred with them.  They were given another chance at life and happiness like they were.  Lambert actually felt some as if The One Who Waits truly is a god worth worshipping.  One benevolent enough to bring poor souls cut down back to life, so that they may enjoy a happy life.  One who not only brought Lambert to life, but granted them an immortal body that can heal from any injury, and with immense power to protect those they hold dear.  Truly there was no one greater than The One Who Waits. Perhaps after all of this is done, The One Who Waits will be kind enough to bring back all of Lamberts friends and families that were slain by the Old Faith.

The Lamb Who Slaughters

Forming a cult, even with unholy god like powers, was not an easy task.  While Lambert was granted an ever lasting body, their followers were still mortal.  They grew old, and would eventually pass away.  Lambert tried their best assure them there was a way to bring them back.  After all, they themselves were brought back by the One Who Waits.  Some were unsure, others descented against them in disbelief.  Even when Lambert eventually did preform a ritual to bring the dead back to life, some were disgusted by the act bringing life to the dead.  all this along with maintaining the cult, keeping them fed, utilizing and recycling any waste, and gathering materials.  Some requested various absurd and disgusting things themselves.  Be it playing mean pranks on others, or eating disgusting foods.  All the complaints and keeping everyone happy was a chore, and the stress of it all came to a boil at times during Lambert's crusades.  All their bottled up anger festered and transformed the lamb into some monstrous being.  One that would decimate all enemies with littler effort.  Lambert would eventually calm themselves, as they would still spot lost travelers on their way.  Bringing the feeling of kindship and grief to their soul, and returning them to normal.

It wasn't all bad back at the cult settlement.  As long as Lambert kept up with keeping everyone fed, well rested, and content, things would be pretty chill for everyone.  This sense of calm and happiness brought a sense of joy in Lambert's heart.  Especially when villagers would personally thank them every day for the life they have now.  Giving them hope and belief in a kind an benevolent god.  Lambert thought they were referring to The One Who Waits, but some have told them it was them, Lambert themselves they believed in.  Many were not sure if just anyone could show such benevolence when granted such powers like the one Lambert had, but these followers were grateful that someone as considerate as Lambert was trusted with them.

They day would come to release The One Who Waits, as the last of the bishops were slaughtered.  The entire cult gathered with Lambert at the gateway lake, to summon forth The One Who Waits.  Upon ascending, Lambert found themselves in a similar plane were they first met their holy deity.  Upon reaching them, Lambert offered their gratitude to their god, for blessing them with new life, and giving hope to the poor and lost once more.  The One Who Waits was pleased to hear such devotion.  With that, he gave  Lambert one last task.  To kneel and be sacrificed.  The One Who Waits requires the lifeforce of one who has gathered enough strength with the Red Crown in order to be fully freed, and returned to his godhood.  Lambert, in the first time in forever, found themselves quivering in fear again.  Begging one last thing from their god.  Lambert only ask that he brings back everyone of Lambert's friends and family, who were unjustly slain by the Old Faith.  The towering god laughed at this notion.  Even if he wanted to do it, The One Who Waits informed Lambert about the fate of his kind.  The One Who Waits couldn't break free with just the help of one lamb.  All the lambs that were slain by the old faith, met with the dark god before Lambert, but they were not as fortunate as them.  In order to even have the power to summon the red crown back to the mortal realm, The One Who Waits needed to feed, and bring back their strength that was drained from them by the bishops.  Lamb after lamb met with him, and were devoured without a single hesitation.  The One Who Waits was cautious though, as he knew one needed to be kept alive for now to fulfill the prophecy.   Lambert was the very last one.  The chained deity could feel it.  And now with the bishops gone, he could finally feast on the last lamb, and be the one true god he was destined to be.  Plus, he said he's quite grown to like the taste of lamb after eating so many.  All the followers were caged up, watching in terror below as the god they thought to be a benevolent being, was demanding his most loyal devotee to die in his name.  Lambert felt a swell of emotions within them.  The fear of dying, the guilt of bringing the followers into this, but most of all, they felt anger.  An anger rivaled only by their hate of the bishops that slaughtered them and their kin.  The One Who Waits, the one Lambert pledged their loyalty to, had eaten all the other lambs of their family, and every other lamb that came their way.  Saving all but one just so he could have someone to do his dirty work, and kill them once they were of no use. Lambert didn't want to die, they didn't want to see the people that trusted them suffer, and they now sought their eyes and vengeance against their god, The One Who Waits.  With a defiant roar, Lambert took their monstrous form once more, and brought the blade to their former god.

The Lamb Who Shepherds

Lambert was victorious, slaying both servants of The One Who Waits, and the selfish god himself.  After all was said and done, former god, Narinder, now reduced to a mere three eyed cat, was brought back to the settlement to join as its newest member.  (Maybe chained up for his crimes against all animal kind.)  Lambert themselves were a bit "changed" from the experience, both mentally, surprisingly physically.  After exiting their enraged berserker state, Lambert felt their form to be, bigger, and oddly curvier.  Perhaps it was some subconscious instinct after claiming the Red Crown for their own to take a more "motherly" form.  They felt an obligation to the follower they mislead by in their belief in Narinder, and sought make things right, as much as they could at least.  There will still be those who seek power control, but so long as someone can a gentle enough heart can find such power, and maintain their nature through the love and assurance of others, they can dominate any all descenters, and bring all into a new glorious age, in the Cult of the Lamb....

So yeah, this has been on my brain for the past couple of days doing two playthroughs of the main game.  Enjoy.  ^w^
