The Planet Series

Share

This piece was created for a university project. I had to design three graphics to represent three of The Planets, Gustav Holst's orchestral suite. The graphics needed to be 20cm by 20cm and contain a 14cm diameter circle in the center, other then that I could only use colour and typography...O' and my tutor said he'd prefer it if they didn't have a similar style.

The Planets (Left to right)

Mars - The Bringer of War

I used the circle to create a launch button and surrounded it with war poetry. The background text is a list of wars since 1991 (the year I was born). The fonts are simple like those used in old war posters.

Venus - The Bringer of Peace

Using the font from the "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters I made an alternative, less cliche format for that quote achieving a peace and quiet them. With a Beatles quote around the edge, I always found that sound calming. Simple, tranquil, minimalist.

Saturn - The Bringer of Old Age

Using the circle as a clock face I used the face for all the bad aspects of getting old and the background is filled with quotes and words that see a positive side to aging.

Originally I was going to continue on my own time and complete a graphic for all of The Planets but sadly I don't have the time. Maybe one day.

It's kinda cool how you took such a simple concept and made it so complex and symbolic.

I really like the representation of the planets through the texts that make them up. This is a really nice use of typography and simple shapes. The color and texture look really nice too.

I would love to see you take on the rest of the planets some day, this is a really well put together piece, and I'm sure that would be as well.

Cheers for the review mate. If I ever get the time I'd like to make the rest of them. We'll have to wait and see.
