Deunan Knute

This piece is very special to me...
This is a picture of Deunan from the original Appleseed VHS cover. When I was a kid, I was a giant anime fan. Anime then wasn't like how it is now, it was impossible to find, and NEVER on TV. You could find boot legged dubbed videos (usually only sub titles though) in little shops sometimes in the city or you had to be a member of some kind of anime mail club. For the clubs you would pay a fee and every month they would send you a new VHS (you didn't always get to pick which you got). Anyway, anime has gone way down hill since then. It really is sad. Old anime where filled with art and ideas, they made you think and inspired you, they changed our culture and went to places cartoons in America only dreamed to go (not that there are not ANY good American animations, cuz there are a few). Anyway, while Appleseed wasn't one of my top favorites it did have one of the best looking box covers. So now you may be asking, that's great and all but, why is this (unfinished?) piece of art so special to you Matthew? It only took me a couple hours draw and when I showed people the pic I was often accused of tracing, holding it up side by side it does look like a direct copy, only when you overlay the original you can see that is is different.
That's all good, but the most impressive thing about this picture was that, while it is true I only colored it today,

I in fact drew the line art when I was only 16 years old. (I am 30 now)

Akira, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll... I think it's become harder to find quality authors in the middle of all the noise and drivel nowadays. On the other hand, the internet negates all that by giving you the power to search and find all the little rare things we identify with.
Nice to see I share influences with such talent. :-)

all i got to say is... DAMN THATS AWESOME

I'm still trying to find the DVD for the Original Appleseed, I seen the VHS of it back in 94 when I was in High School

deathink responds:

Yeah, I was looking online for the dvd, but couldn't find it... however I didn't really look that hard.

deathink responds:
