the chao = toads
Shadow = Wario
Silver = Waluigi
Amy = Peach
Cream = Daisy
Metal Sonic = Bowser Jr.
Blaze = Rosalina

Is the Piranha Plant's design in this artwork supposed to reference the designs of the Piranha Plants from the training scene in the Mario movie?

Sort of. But mostly it supposed to look more like a robot. Because it was made by Bowser and Dr.Eggman fusion. Since Mario is about stomping turtles, mushrooms and plants. While Sonic is about stomping on robots.
