*GPU - Gosudarstvennoe Politicheskoe Upravlenie (State Political Directorate); founded in 1922 by the Russian State Federative Socialist Republic, they were the intelligent service agents and secret police that arrested suspected counter-revolutionaries until their replacement by the OGPU (Joint State Political Directorate) in 1923

**Kolkhoz - Russian abbreviation for kollektívnoye khozyáystvo (collective business or farm); they are formed by semi-independent commune of "voluntary" farmers that had some autonomy on how they run their agricultural operations, so long as they paid their fair share of taxes to the Soviet government
