Colour of Loss - CotM01

Share

Been around a year since I last was able to submit anything for Jazza's Challenge of the Month..Student-life got the best of me.

But now I wanna get back into it. January's challenge was to colour one of his illustrations, since he just released a colouring book.

I wanted to really focus on the ghost. I also wanted her to be warm, which is not common to colour ghosts as, since they're dead, but I wanted to show her love for the man and how she will keep loving him and helping her significant other even after death. Had a lot of fun trying to make her ghostly without using cold colours. I also removed the linework around her character (still making sure to "colour within the lines" as according to the rules (except a few extra strands of hair), of course) since that would help making her seem more ethereal. I kept the solid linework for the man and the rest of the picture.

Had a lot of fun being able to practice colouring like this!

Wow. Wow! This is so impressive, and really unique. I love the unique emphasis and the description explaining it. I also like how the roses have a glow that matches the girl in passion. Very beautiful, and made me think of the piece differently. Great job, hope to see more!

CollyWobble-l3 responds:

oh wow, thank you so much! It's always a bit scary to upload art of any kind so it really means a lot to hear that you appreciate it!

When browsing through the submissions, your work really stood out to me. I think you really succeeded to give the ghost a warm feeling, and I love the contrast in colours. The only feedback I could give is that the cross and plate are maybe a bit to light in colour. It slightly distracts a bit from the focus of the man and woman, and it seems like there is a secondary light source coming from the front. If that was what you meant for it to be, forget I said anything :). I'm definitely not an expert, but I like your work so much that I just wanted to reach out and tell you that I sincerely hope you keep it up!

CollyWobble-l3 responds:

Thank you so much, means a lot to hear what you thought of it! Light sources, and light and shadow in general is definitely something I'm still trying to figure out, but haven't quite gotten the hang of yet. I'm always afraid that it'll turn out too dark and muddy and I am notorious for messing up where I decide my light source is coming from, but I do think you are right about the cross and metal plate. I might go back and rework it with your comments in mind and hopefully learn how to do it better next time. Again thanks so much for your comment ^.^
