My Tribute To Pink Floyd The Wall

Share

This was something I made a while back but didn't finish until now. One of my favourite bands growing up was the Psychedelic Rock Group Pink Floyd. Like many others that grew up in the 80s and 90s, I was first introduced to this band through this very song:

Another Brick In The Wall Part 2

Little did I know at the time, it was a small chapter in a huge story.

For those who don't know. Pink Floyd started out in the mid 60s, with Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright as the well known members. Barrett being the lead when they started. Unfortunately, a mix of drugs and a lingering mental disorder caused the band to brokenheartedly kick Syd out of the band. A mistake many members including Roger Waters, who was also a close friend of Barrett's to regret to this day. When Roger Waters lead the band, they changed their style from Space Rock to Psychedelic, with a bit of blues mixed into it. Creating such classics as Dark Side Of The Moon and Animals. However it was during the latter something began to noticeably change in Roger Waters. Whether it was grief from losing his friend or the newfound fame going to his head, I don't know. Waters however became increasingly erratic. During a tour in Montreal, where he was promoting Animals, two things happened. One some idiot lit a firework in the front row, causing Waters to chew him out. The other, another fan tried to climb the rope fence separating the band from the crowd. Once he reached his eye level, Roger Waters spat in the guy's face. While I do believe he was well justified, because he was trying to put on a show and lower disruption, Waters himself regretted the incident, because it was that moment by his own admission, he realized what kind of a jerk he was being. The events during and prior inspired him to create The Wall. Their first Rock Opera (Rock and Roll Album with a story to tell.).

The Wall was a Semi-Biographical story in which revolved around a character named Pink. Modelled after Roger Waters and Syd Barrett. Pink was born during the tail end of World War II, when his father was killed during The Battle of Anzio. A notion that is shared with Waters' real life father. As Pink grew up, he was abused by his post war fanatic teacher for dreaming of being more than what society wanted him to be. A real life "Fuck you." To the Post-War Education and Disciplinary system, that Roger Waters and Pink Floyd Cartoonist, Gerald Scarfe suffered first hand of. He was also constantly smothered by his overbearing mother. Who feared he'd leave her or die like his father did. These events being the first bricks of the titular wall. A mental barrier of Pink's design in an effort to protect himself from the cruelties of the real world. When Pink reached adulthood, he became a successful Rock Star. However the life along with his prior insecurities has caused him to neglect his own wife, while he filled the empty spaces of his wall with Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. One day during an after concert party, Pink tries to reconnect with her, only to find a man answering his phone. His wife was cheating on him with an Anti-War Protester. In an attempt to get even, Pink brings a groupie to his hotel room for the purposes of a revenge lay. Only to find himself to angered by his wife to go through with it. Resulting in him snapping and trashing the hotel room with his bare hands. Feeling he has nothing to lose, Pink finishes the wall and retreats behind it. Making him catatonic and comatose in the real world while he reflects on what made him this way. His manager shows up and drugs him in an effort to stabilize him long enough for the next gig. Unfortunately the result of the cocktail he took, made him hallucinate transforming into a Neo Nazi, turning his concert into a Reich. Eventually it all comes to a halt, when he puts himself on trial. With the School Teacher, his Wife and his Mother playing witness to the prosecution. The judge sentences him to be exposed before his peers. Prompting him to tear down the wall. The ending ambiguous to whether or not Pink survived or if he's doomed to go crazy all over again.

The Wall has themes of War, Sex, Violence and the sliding scale of Conformity and Anarchy. With Pink's attempts on the latter, turning him into the former as a result. On top of being a great album, The Wall found success through many concerts. One of the most famous being Live at the Berlin Wall. As well as a cult movie by Alan Parker.

Now a lot of people may like Pink Floyd, hate them or just don't get them. That's fine and all, but I think we can all agree that Nostalgia Critic's "Review" if you call it that, is a disgusting mess.

My tribute is that of a small gif building said wall. Enjoy.

Didn't know you were quite this good at making cool gifs. Good job!

CIEIRMusic responds:

Thanks. It's how I first started animating on my old youtube channel. My digital drawings are yet to be desired, but when it comes to animated scenes I would make each sequence the old fashioned way. By making still photos for basic movements. Then compiling them into gifs. I would then use video editing software to piece them together add music and voila I made a short animated series or digital comic. Also if you like this one, I got more in my art section. I reccomend "Don't Read This Fucking Book."

tetris

CIEIRMusic responds:

Now that would be something.
