8 bit hasn't change
The use of the block in 3D are almost perfect if it wasn't for the intersecting blocks like you said then he would have feet and head but it looks better this way.Making it as a backround very createful.

After seeing a Mario piece using the same concept I decided to make one of my own featuring my favorite FFVI / FFIII character, Locke Cole.
There's some intersecting blocks here and there, unfortunately I lost the scene file a long time ago.
