Pastel Dog Portrait

Author Comments

This I did in 2001, around the Christmas time season afew months after September 11th. At least we had somewhat of an economy, and they complained because for that time it was seen as bad. How I wish it was even 1/2 as good as that!

It was a customer portrait commissioned from a snap-shot of their dog. 11x17 pastel paper

Now, to me, I can tell it's a drawing. YES! Seriously this is a drawing! I mean, can;t you tell??? I can! I drew it!

But, I've been picked on several times for people telling me it's a snap-shot of a dog!

NO! It's a pastel drawing of a dog, freehand drawn from a snap-shot of a dog... and yeah, it's a kind-of snap-shot of the drawing...

That's why more and more I don't care to make my art look too realistic anymore, and rather try to make at least some parts stylized, or exaggerated to let people know it's actually art. Because I'm just sooooooooo fed up with arguing with people who know nothing about art that it's art and NOT a photo!

I mean, c'mon! You guys are smart, right? It looks like a drawing right?

very realistic

i thought it was a photo for 1 second, just that the eye is a lil plane, but good job

That is so awsome. I can hardly believe it, pure epic skills needed for that one!

The amount of detail you put into the piece is astounding.
Its clear that you paid attention to each of the follicles of fur on your dog as well as how the light reflects off of the dog's coat.

Its even more impressive that this was done entirely with pastels. Astounding job.
