Decent. I like how short and easy to read this was, and the ease of the quick-time events prevented gameplay from slowing to a crawl. That said this isn't much of a visual novel. There are no real choices, branches, and the quick-time events don't even have time limits so they aren't how actual QTEs are supposed to work.

The characters also fall kind of flat. You have a generic protagonist, then a teacher and two classmates with no characterization whatsoever. It's never explained why the "loser" protagonist is approached by a classmate in the first place, and the it makes no sense as to why the aliens even care about the students if they're looking for a "substance." Maybe the substance is one of the characters? I don't really know or care, as that would be more of an excuse than a believable plot element.

The music and dialogue suggest that this is supposed to be funny, but while the expressions and casual demeanor of the characters make this style of VN possible, the lack of situational humor make this less dramatic than a drama and less comedic than comedy, leaving the submission stranded somewhere in the middle.

All I can say is meh. Art style is meh, story is meh, quick time events are meh. About the most average thing I've seen. Not bad, but it's kind of sucked dry from a lot of originality.

I liked it a lot. More of an interactive "movie" then a game, but that is what I liked most. Very great work!!

I'm one of those guys who never comments on anything ever however I have recently noticed a HUGE change in your art style which makes it look extremely nice as a person who came on this amazing line of games before dead detention 1 ended i have been nothing but impressed with these new games keep it up! (sorry I'm no Einstein who can use big words)

Thanks so much!

The visual quality is going to get a massive step up in my next series "Phantom Reverse" - really excited about it :-)

I'm pretty disappointed that you'd trace drawings done by professionals in the anime industry and not mention it outright. To me that comes off as if you're hoping for people not to notice and just take it as your actual skill. I don't know for a fact that you traced all the drawings, but I know that you traced an image of Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist, so it isn't too far-fetched to assume you wouldn't use your own time and skill- if there is any- to draw the rest of the characters from scratch. Not to mention you're unoriginal writing from your first series. Well, this is Newgrounds after all; I don't know what I was expecting, honestly.

JackAstral responds:

Ah yh I used rin as reference for one of the frames - where Rey does the peace sign thingy. That's one of my fave anime - i was meant to include a joke-y reference in that part but didnt get around to it - once i finish all the episodes ill be combing them into one, so i'll make sure to include it there (along with just more polish in general ) For now, I just uploaded a patch to make it look more unique and not so similar :)

Blue Lights starts pretty similar to Dead Detention, just due to the nature of the story, but it quickly diverts and evolves into it's own thing !
