Game made for the Ludum Dare 36.

Truelly WEIRD game about the *boring* life of a gas station attendant.

Probably sort of spoilers so if you don't want that, stop here.

I have a hard time really classifying this as a game. The entire thing about games that separates it from other types of media is the ability to make choices. Even in a linear FPS game, you're making the choice of where to move and where to shoot and so on. This is a 'game' with only two choices I can find, and one of them is a false choice because only one of the choices actually advances the game. So, it doesn't have that aspect of a game. Well, can you fail? I can't find any discernible failure state so I'd say no. Is the gameplay enjoyable? Not even remotely. I continued out of stubbornness, but the actual gameplay itself is frankly extremely boring. Refueling vehicles isn't enjoyable. Monotonous tasks can be fun, something like Euro Truck Simulator requires very little effort, but still active effort all the time, and involves what some consider a very calming task. In this game half of your time is spent waiting for the opportunity to actually complete your monotonous task, which isn't enjoyable or relaxing anyways.

I'm alright with the idea of 'artsy' games that are primarily focused on conveying a meaning, but in my opinion the game still needs to be enjoyable. The characters aren't interesting because they only get two lines of dialogue each. Any hopes that they'll be building up the world you live in are crushed when you realize that they're all picking their two lines entirely at random out of a fairly small pool that begins to repeat itself very quickly. If there is some greater story, the amount of time I'm expected to invest to uncover it is excessive.

So, what we have here is what I'd consider to be an entirely unenjoyable, frankly flat game, that has a deeper artistic meaning. What is that meaning? Hell if I know. And that I think really is the worst part. In the process of creating this game, anything that could be defined as 'fun' was thrown out of the window in the name of art. I never felt any emotional investment because all the characters fall into one of two categories, the 99% of them who recycle the same lines and have no actual character or development that I could even begin to care about, and the one other character who is extremely flat and just sort of there as a little voice in your head to complain about or compliment you for your choices, for the handful of lines of dialogue he actually has. All this game has going for it is it's artistic meaning. And having 'beaten' the 'game', I have very little idea of what that meaning is supposed to be. I have an idea, a basic theory, but that's it. The entire game just left me feeling as though I'd been cheated out of the time I spent playing it. I only give it a single star because there is very evidently effort put into this and I guess some other people have been able to derive more meaning from this than me. The only part of this experience I found even remotely enjoyable though was the music at the end.

All I can really say is that the game needs more. It needs more dialogue. It needs more actual story. It needs more aspects of gameplay, like maybe also having to sell those other products the characters mention wanting to buy. Something like Papers Please where you have to keep track of an ever growing list of requirements. It needs...more of everything. The game is extremely underdeveloped. I don't think the fact that this game was made for the whole Ludum Dare excuses it's underdevelopment. The point of Ludum Dare should be to make an experience that is complete and enjoyable, and expandable later if you want to. Not something half-baked that you can throw up and maybe finish later if you want to. This game has the potential to be interesting but a product shouldn't be sold on potential alone.

tl;dr: Game is so obsessed with being art that it forgets to also be a game. It's too small in scale and scope to make any of it's characters interesting and it's too avant garde to actually have any sort of really discernible artistic meaning anyways. Needs way more development to become a fully realized experience.

Meh.

It looks cool, but there isn't much context to it. There isn't a clear message, even compared to other art games.

A unique concept that took me a while to figure out. The art is great and the music is amazing, and i think you could do well with more work and notoriety.
