In Cooking Witch you play as a witch flying to a party in the woods, abducting the children and cooking and eating them. You can upgrade your gear such as your broom, cauldron and equip hooks to be able to carry more children. Cook and eat as much meat as you can, but watch out for the angry Daddies or they will hunt you down!

4 starts, would have been 5 if not for the lag.

I'm not removing points for this, but wtf?!? Cooking children? Couldn't we cook the young of some non-human animals instead? Or steal their candy? Or turn them into goblins or something? Well I guess this is NG and everything goes. I'm usually not against games where kids can die, but deliberately hunting them seems a bit much, even though it does fit the witch narrative.

This game is pretty good, because IMO it is different from most of what we usually play. Various kids (OMG why?) give various things, with the green ones being the best (time :) ). Achievements are nice. Upgrades are nice (but linear IMO).

However, there are a few bad things.

First, the lag. Especially when cooking. Is it really necessary to have that special effect? Could we perhaps have an option to select something less laggy (even if it is not as cool?). This was worth at least a star in and of itself, and I wonder if I should't give an even lower rating because of it.

Second, it's pretty linear, and gets repetitive over time. The upgrades just lets you do the same thing, but better. The hunters don't get harder over time (which would have been frustrating anyways because of the lag). Either one IMO would fix this. This didn't reduce the score because the game seems original and entertaining enough to be fun to play long enough. I'd expect more if you did a sequel, though.

Finally, the theme is a bit offensive. I don't think it's suitable to remove stars from a rating on NG for this, however, since it is NG after all.

By the way, on a completely neutral note, I didn't get if there was a way to prevent the bell from being rung. I don't mind at all, because the hunters are just a speedbump and make the game better. But I was wondering if I was supposed to be all stealthy-like at first. It seems like there are so many kids it's impossible to stop them from ringing the bell. Which as I said before is fine, otherwise there is no hunter and that'd get boring IMO.

VaragtP responds:

Haha, sorry to offend, but that is part of the fun :) It is possible to sneak up on the children from behind, or if they get scared catch them before they ring the bell. A screaming running kid will also gradually scare other children. The stealth mechanic is there, but it is not really necessary (or always preferable) to use it. The lag is a problem, I originally developed the game in Exe windows format so I went a bit overboard with effects :/. Btw it will be possible to buy the windows version from my site http://www.varagtp.com/ soon for a "pay what you want" price if anyone is interested. The windows version should run in 60 fps on even low end computers and it have even more effects, reflecting water, smoke, fullscreen and others stuff..

I have learned a lot from this project though, especially on how to optimize. But I am happy you liked the game despite this:)

I was thinking the embed for this game was the wrong resolution, but it turns out that was just the intro... still looks a bit odd though. The game itself was pretty fun, a rather uique idea and really detailed graphics! In fact, they're so detailed that the game won't stop lagging when I play it... of course that's just my computer, but it would be nice if the option to toggle between qualities wasn't removed from the right-click menu. Why?! :O Anyway, keep up the good work! Apart from that it's a great play.
