Eulogy For 'Ping'

Here is its eulogy, a collection of the kind words written about it while still among the living. They shall live on forever in its place.

Hello! Ping is a game based on Pong. I am beginning to learn AS3 and I decided to mess with pong a bit. I had a lot of great help from my friend MSGHero. Shout out to Mike Welsh for helping with the pre-loader troubles.

Thanks for playing!

Use your mouse to move.

EDIT 05/25/2013: The mouse is no longer hidden during game play.

Nice game, good start in flash, you could add more power-ups like a faster ball, you could also add a select difficulty option in the settings.

The mouse control is nearly impossible to use accurately. May I suggest switching to arrow keys?
Also, when the computer scores a point the ball flies at you so quickly that you have no time to react to it, allowing the comp. to gain a few extra points.
Finally, the collision detection was a bit off at some points, making the ball pass directly through my paddle.
Good attempt at a first game, but it needs a bit of tweaking before I would release it publicly.

While a nice throwback to the early days of video gaming, this game was more frustrating than fun due to a number of factors:

1) The paddles are REALLY short, even by retro standards. They need to be much longer - I would say double their current length, at least.

2) The paddles are too close to the center of the screen. They should be moved further away, to give players more time to react. I lost the vast majority of points from the initial "tip-off" rather than from volleys with the CPU.

3) The velocity of the ball may need to be lowered a bit, depending on the degree of changes in reference to points #1 and #2.

The enemy paddle is way too accurate. The difficulty doesn't scale at all. The powerups always appear in one spot, and whenever you lose, the ball immediately starts off moving on your side of the screen so unless you react fast or are already close to the ball trajectory, it often cause 1 ball drop to lead into 2 or 3. The powerups in general were quite bad: the larger ball is useless, invisibility is easily countered, and the longer paddle upgrade is the only plausibly good one. The paddles are also too small to start out with, I'm hitting a small ball, not training to be a navy seal sniper.

*Warning* Do not lose this game if you are prone to seizures! Otherwise, very nice Pong game you have here, with a power-up twist!

I really enjoy pong games a lot. This one is no exception. There are a couple of issues that just may be me, but that might also affect others.

1st. The white on black contrast is a little disorienting. After straing at it for about 35-40 minutes per game, my it all starts blurring together and my eye muscles start hurting from the strain. So I end up misjudging a lot of my shots thinking my paddle is there when its really just a tad bit lower or higher.

2nd. I had a great great great many shots miss because my mouse went off screen. If you could add a line that would pause the game when the mouse goes off screen, or even locks the mouse ON screen, it would help out greatly.

Like I said, its still a great game, and the changes I mentioned wont stop me from playing either way. It will just take a lot longer to get the medals. Anyway, thanks again.

the mouse is off the screen, you should use the keyboard but nevertheless is a good game ;)

Exactly what the previous reviewer said, but I think it makes the game terrible.

Could be great. But we have to keep guessing "where is the pointer". I couldn't get the "skin of your teeth" medal because of that, I always ended up missing at least one.

I have no issue with the mouse control, my is that it seem like the ball go's through your paddle at times and it starts to quickly, I almost always miss the first computer serve. has anyone received the secret medal, if so can I have a clue.

Keyboard controls would be a VAST improvement. The mouse arrow is a MAJOR distraction with my browser. And it's still visible.

Ahhh !!! He won with me 19:20 ! God damnit !

There's a bug where if the computer wins while having a power-up (in my case the vanishing ball) they will continue to have it for all of the next game.

This game is basically Pong but with power-ups, but I like the addition of medals , and I like the power-ups. Good game but I think this would have been better if it was in the app store.

this isn't 1970 this is 2014 pong is one of the first games ever and it takes 5 minutes to make the only reason im giving this a one is because the powerups are cool
