You have fallen into a vast underground maze. Can you find your way out, or will you end up trapped in darkness forever?

We recommend playing in a dimly lit room with your speaker or headphone volume turned up. It's best to play I Can't Escape late at night, as it is an eerie exploration experience.

Troubleshooting: This game requires flash player 11+. If you don't have flash player 11, the game will tell you, and you should download it (for free) here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ .

If you get the error "requires 3D hardware rendering," that means it's not running on your graphics card for some reason. Try right clicking the game, clicking settings, and make sure "enable hardware acceleration" is checked in the display tab, then refresh the page. If that doesn't work, try updating your graphics card driver or your flash player version.

If you're using windows 8, cheese123 mentioned to me that he couldn't get the game to run unless he ran chrome in windows 8 mode. If you're using windows 8 and having trouble, you can try that and see if it makes a difference. Thanks a lot to cheese123!

If you are still having trouble playing the game, feel free to send me a PM!

A fascinating game. But after a lot of trials I almost believe that there is no escape. A few observations that might help others:

1) A restart seems to generate a new maze (different arrangement of the rooms).

2) I have disovered FOUR ways of falling down:

- through black holes (clearly visible),
- through holes covered with greens (barely visible, but still visible)
- while attempting to open certain closed doors (no holes visible)
- standing too long at the same spot (90 % sure)

The problem is that one can avoid both types of holes (and perhaps also standing still too long), but eventually one will fall down without warning when trying to open certain doors.

I would like to know whether there is a solution or not. ;)

You are fairly observant! I'm not going to give away whether there is a solution or not, but I will confirm for you that you are correct that there are four ways of falling down. The fourth way of falling down you mentioned is half right - staying in the same spot increases the chances of an event happening, but it is not the cause. You are also right that the trap doors are the only way to fall that you cannot avoid, and that there is procedural level generation going on here. I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and it's interesting seeing people figure out the mysteries of the game, although there are still several left!

I'm giving it a four because the game and graphics were absolutely addicting. The knocked off star is because it doesn't have WASD compatibility and no pause button. With ghosts wandering about and I go to do something I notice I am knocked down a few floors because I couldn't pause. Simple gameplay mechanics break the whole thing mate.

davidmaletz responds:

It's pretty funny the things a developer can miss! A pause button and WASD support would've been great, along with strafing using Q/E. Keep in mind, I only had a month to make this game for the OneGameAMonth Challenge, but I definitely overlooked those! Thanks for the suggestions, if I have a chance to revise it or make a sequel, these will definitely be added!

On one hand i have to give you credit for making a game in 3d. You don't see that often on this site
It also reminded me of old games like daggerfall or eye of the beholder.
On the other hand it's not very scary once you've played it more then once and realize the ghost
can't hurt you.

this game is terrifyingly claustrophobic. turning round each corner wondering whats going to jump out at you, this is a brilliant feeling that not even the games on ps3 or xbox can give keep it up
