You have fallen into a vast underground maze. Can you find your way out, or will you end up trapped in darkness forever?

We recommend playing in a dimly lit room with your speaker or headphone volume turned up. It's best to play I Can't Escape late at night, as it is an eerie exploration experience.

Troubleshooting: This game requires flash player 11+. If you don't have flash player 11, the game will tell you, and you should download it (for free) here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ .

If you get the error "requires 3D hardware rendering," that means it's not running on your graphics card for some reason. Try right clicking the game, clicking settings, and make sure "enable hardware acceleration" is checked in the display tab, then refresh the page. If that doesn't work, try updating your graphics card driver or your flash player version.

If you're using windows 8, cheese123 mentioned to me that he couldn't get the game to run unless he ran chrome in windows 8 mode. If you're using windows 8 and having trouble, you can try that and see if it makes a difference. Thanks a lot to cheese123!

If you are still having trouble playing the game, feel free to send me a PM!

Want to know if it's possible to escape? You can check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8mw9azY9qk .

Definatly worth playing. Somewhat more scary stuff would make it even better for me. I don't want sick, disturbing stuff poppin' up on my screen that scares me so much I throw my laptop through the window and go sit in a foetus position for 2 weeks, but a little more in that direction would make it great.
One other thought: you give the option to play with the mouse but it makes gameplay so much sloppyer in comparison with playing with the arrow keys. I think it's better not giving that option at all.

I don't know if it was your intention, but I think it represents a descent into madness well. I spent awhile trying to actively escape, but after that, I started actively seeking out the holes, going as deep as I could. I won't spoil what's at the bottom, but I say well done.

My only complaint is that I walked away from the game to get food, and when I came back, I was still alive and unharmed. I felt like that took all the danger factor out for me.

Yeah, the game can definitely be seen as a descent to madness - trying desperately to escape, yet somehow getting deeper, and even intentionally going deeper when you feel there's no other way. The fact that there even is an escape, but it's almost impossible to find make the analogy even better!

As for leaving the game and nothing happening, I've had the opposite response too! They left the game to go to the bathroom, and ended on a different level and were upset! Most of the time, when you fall, it is by your own actions (which again follows the madness analogy), so you wont often fall without moving. But, sometimes, in rare instances, you will fall even without any input at all!

I play this game on the tablet and the game shows a black screen, help?

davidmaletz responds:

Yeah, I've noticed some tablets have trouble running the game in a browser. Try the adobe air version, you can download it here: http://www.indiedb.com/games/i-cant-escape/downloads/i-cant-escape-air and run it on your tablet.

I made it to the end! BTW I really doubt if its possible to win, since every ladder, visually trapped or not, is actually a hole! I saw multiple ladders without visual holes on the first level, but they all leaded me down (where I found ladders up which actually DID take me back). If it is possible, then please say it to me in a PM, davidmaletz. Great game, but needs improvement (like new floors, A HUD showing floor level, keys etc. and maybe even a multiplayer mode) .

davidmaletz responds:

You're probably falling through hidden pits - while I call them hidden, you actually CAN see them if you look carefully. If you can't recognize hidden pits, you wont be able to escape! Almost all ladders on the first floor are inaccessible, you're not going to be able to escape easily, but it is possible - you can see me escaping in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8mw9azY9qk (but the video makes it seem easier than it is!). As for the improvements, a few people have suggested a HUD, but I feel like it's not necessary - you're supposed to get lost anyways! You'll have to keep track of the level number and keys yourself haha.

I have no clue what I would do with a multiplayer mode for this game, if you have some suggestions, send me a PM! Thanks for the review and the suggestions!

I am asked to slide the slider till the black box is barely visible, so I slide it all the way to the left and guess what? its still super visible.

davidmaletz responds:

Haha, you must have a very bright monitor, or very good eyes (or both). When I slide the slider all the way to the left, the game looks almost pitch black! Just play with the slider all the way to the left, perhaps reducing your screen brightness a little. You'll have a slight advantage as you'll be able to see everything better, but that's ok!
