Soulcaster was built in XNA and originally appeared on Xbox Live Indie Games. It has been ported to PC (along with its sequel), and this HTML5 version is its latest incarnation, made possible with Kevin Gadd's JSIL technology.

This is kind of an experiment, offering the full game on Newgrounds for free--we're not sure what impact this will have on retail sales or what kind of ad revenue we'll get, but I'm excited to bring this game to a wider audience.

Drop me a line to let me know what you think!

We recommend using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome to play, but a modern version of any web browser should work.

If the game is stuttering or lagging please ensure you have at least Firefox 16 or are running Google Chrome.

Known browser issues:
Internet Explorer 10 has a bug that makes text scroll off the screen.
Sound and music may not work in Safari.
If you run into issues in either of the above browsers, please try a different one. We apologize for the inconvenience!

If keyboard input isn't working, try clicking on the game window.

The game does not currently support touchscreens, so if you're on a phone or tablet, we apologize.

If the game fails to load or crashes, please click 'Show Log' and copy the text out of the log so that we can fix the crash. We really appreciate it.

Have fun!

Original Concept and I can keep playing it! Brilliant crossover between an RPG and a strategy game!
Keep up the good work!

Seems a really good game, but the strategy part needs to be more strategic! As some one stated i would like to see where monster spawn so i can prepare for it and not panic. Also the monsters are quite fast and they come to me before i can set up my defense.

The movement sometimes seems jerky and the character has some problems when walking though enemies.

Would love if you improved those parts but the game itself is good though i haven't yet finished it.

MagicalTimeBean responds:

Thanks for your suggestions--adding some more enemy telegraphing will allow for more strategies and less running around spamming. It's definitely a goal for the next Soulcaster game.

i realize that this is a beta, but the resources used by this game are way to high...especially something with pixelated graphics.

i can run all flash games on newgrounds(most on med/high), but this one i have problems with. altho the video seems just fine, the audio will stutter and the cpu is hogged to the point where i cant have anything else running.

yes i have the latest firefox, version 17 to be exact.
also,no idea how to contact you about the problem :P

MagicalTimeBean responds:

You can send me a PM or use the contact form on my website ( 80% of the assets are the music, as you can guess the graphics are hardly anything. HTML5 is definitely more of a CPU hog than Flash, but with time I think more and more systems will be able to run it, and browsers will improve their performance.

This game was fantastic, the mechanic was really nice. I've never seen it before.

I would have liked to be able to see where monsters will spawn after a button press before pressing the button, to choose strategic locations (of course when starting the level again I then knew where they'd spawn so it's fine I guess).

I would have liked a warning before exiting to the next level. Sometimes I accidently stepped on the exit while I still wanted to take items and coins.

The game could have been a bit longer, and the ending a bit more epic.

MagicalTimeBean responds:

A lot of people want to see a final boss fight, and I hear that... going to see what I can do about that for Soulcaster III. Also, telegraphing incoming enemy forces is another thing I want to improve on, maybe by giving an animation and sound effect when a spawner is about to start releasing enemies.

WOW!!!Great game everything it awesome the only thing i wouls add is an is a fireball attack for the player
but if you wanted to add classes a melee for a warrior or a arrow for a ranger
but man i am soo hokked on this one more more this rts/rpg is sweet

MagicalTimeBean responds:

Thanks for the feedback! The first prototype has a fireball attack for the summoner, but it wasn't that much fun to use because the controls are set up for grid-based movement, so aiming was cumbersome. It also made it unique to have no attacks for the player, and to have to rely on summons.
