Nice retro platformer! very reminiscent of Donkey Kong :D
I have a few suggestions...
1. While i'm not totally against the idea of dying if you fall from a high place, it would be nice if it wasn't so extreme. I fell from a place that was just barely above what I could jump normally and died..
2. Please remove the rapid jump using the space bar. There would be times I only meant to jump once, but had accidentally held the spacebar..Therefore, I would jump to my death accidentally.
3. It would be nice to also tweak the physics a bit, so that you could move in midair.
4. The continue option seems a bit redundant, as you start from the same level you left off, regardless of how many deaths you incurred.

Other than these, the game is a nice platformer that will appeal to many old-skool gamers, like myself : ) Good Job!

Its not half bad, It has the graphics of a sega gamegear and the music sounds like it to but the platforms, the enemy's and the story of it reminds me of donkey kong.
The huge bluebird really makes me think of the sega gamegear.

Wow, this is a true retro! A little bit to true for me, means a little bit too difficult for nowadays. I prefer better handling during jumping, but to the hardcore platformer this is a nice flashback to the first Mario game.

So this is your version of Donkey Kong....okay....

The graphics are nice enough retro-style. Your sound fx are in the same retro style, not bad.

But here's the thing, the controls (mostly the jump) feel slippery. And after a few stages I'm really not feeling motivated to try to complete this game. Just because it has been done so many times before.

It's not a bad game but it's been overkilled, just like supermario bro games.

If your going to redo a game semi-emulation style bring in a new hook! Not something so simple as changing out the mad-monkey for a bird.
