A game written for Ludum Dare 24 - the theme was "Evolution." The enemies are procedurally generated, each generation beyond the first consists of the most effective enemies from the last coupled with a few random mutations.
In other words, the enemies undergo not-so-natural selection and evolve over time.
This is a post-compo update!

Why are there upgrades for the main, secondary and missiles past 2 but the game never lets you buy them? Would have been nice if the game told me that buying them wasn't allowed. Otherwise, because I couldn't buy them i had far too much hp because that was infinite buy. Shield upgrade is pointless due to you losing it regardless if you die or beat a Generation, but once you get to like Gen5, because you cant upgrade guns, it becomes a "well there's nothing else to get" situation.
Decent shmup game, but would have liked it if you could evolve further as well.
I didn't have time to add additional upgrades, and I agree that the game suffered as a result. I'll be addressing this issue and many others in a new version of the game soon. A from-scratch recreation done in a less restrictive timespan. Thank you for taking the time to write a review. :)

This game is extremely interesting- I found that you can make the game easier by selective destruction. I had a few generations with no bullets coming my way. It's easily the most fun bullet hell shooter I've played, but there were a few glitches- lives aren't consistent across levels- in fact, they decrease every time you complete a generation. Also, you can't turn while you're firing missiles, meaning they're a terribly underpowered weapon, as they tend to leave you vulnerable. Interesting game, though.
Thank you for your criticisms. I'll be addressing these issues and more in a new version of the game soon. :)
