The arrow keys move your character,
The [S] key mutes
and the [M] key pauses
*EDIT* - PLEASE READ
I altered the game a bit, made some parts easier after getting a few complaints by PM.
For some reason the preloader doesn't work in this new altered version so you'll most likely get a blank screen while the game is loading - but don't worry, it'll load eventually.
Also, submitting this new version might lose your save file - sorry

I just completed this game, it was a very challenging but fun game. Although I had a few problems with the controls on other websites but worked well here on NG with this updated version and using IE. Very adventurous game, enjoyed it when you thought you completed it, there was yet another step. What about the milk at the store so mom can make dinner?

BRAVO
as metroidvania it was a very servicable experience, and i enjoyed the exploration and platform action very much. It was pleasing finding the secret and locating the last couple of bits and bobs.
but then the last levels, wow. I honestly though, honestly now, that I was never going to get to the end. I began to suspect I couldn't do it or that it wasn't possible. the first part of the tower is nails but the second part took me the best part of a week to get past. I'd like to blame lag a little bit and the busy screen meaning that the jump failing was roughly half of the problem, but still- that was dead on level design, really frustrating and incredibly satisfying.
I just completed this on jayisgames but i had to come over here and say thanks, and great work, and make another!
on a final note: the story...?

Really nice and not hard. Until the ending segment where you get destroyed.
After one hour of trying to clear the part where the screen moves from the bottom I decided to desist, and so I'll never know how the game ends.
Also the "fetch quest" for the directional maze was a waste of time.

This was a really fun game, took me a few hours to beat it, but I felt really accomplished once I did. The exploration was really fun, and the fact that talking to NPC's did help and was actually required to win. There may have been just a bit too much backtracking to get the gems, but I found it OK.
Just a couple of things:
1) When you jump and continue holding up when you land you jump again, I don't know if that is in there on purpose but it got really annoying in the long climbing part.
2) I think there should be one more checkpoint in the climbing area as well. At some point I kept getting really far really easily just to keep dying on one jump, so it was like a minute of easy then I was dead and had to try again.
3) Also, I think it would be nice to get a super secret upgrade to give you one more hit point, even if it was just for the final boss, but that would just be to make it a bit easier on people, not necessary.
Thanks for playing through it and for the feedback. Glad you liked it.
