Simply said, the art was bad, the 'music' was bad, the background grunting was bad, the atmosphere was bad. It was trying to be creepy without ever being creepy.

Okay, first off: Subtitles are sort of a must for quiet openings. Animated subtitles in particular would have been quite suiting.

Some things could have been done better. For example, the blood dripping from the top edge of the box at the start left me thinking "how did that liquid get on the top edge?" rather than feeling it was an unsettling situation. A blood puddle probably would have been better for the reaction I think you wanted ("Is my guy injured? Was he in there with someone who was? This is weird...").

The weird numpad puzzle wasn't exactly thrilling, but a handful of other small puzzles would have made the game more fun. Also, if there was a use for the guy in the tree I didn't find it.

Still, I like adventure games, and it was an unusual art style/scenario, so 3 stars for concept and use of graphics. Needs work but I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

When finishing this game, I said this:

That was... what?

It's a great narrative, I love the ambiance and atmosphere.
