It looks like an attempt at mimicking games like "The Body" or "Don't Look Back" or "The company of myself". But in this case interactiveness is way too scarce, and I didn't feel empathic with the characters even the slightest bit. "The Body" has less dialogues but it's more emotional and visually appealing, while "The company of myself" (or its prequel) has a lot more speech and this defines the characters better, making you care for them. You stood in the middle, failing to achieve both objectives.

Still it's an interesting approach and I'm sure you can improve it. I like people trying to create emotional and un-traditional gaming experiences. Wish you the best.

I thought this was beautifully animated. The story was interesting and compelling, it really made you stop and think while playing/watching and I commend you for trying something unconventional with your work. I think having more possible choices would be cool, but it might not fit with your theme of free will and the illusion thereof. Nice work!

This art game was very sad and depressing, I hated the man at the beginning but began to think he felt bad for what he had done. I think all this lacks is gameplay, personally I would have liked this a whole lot more if it was a flash, but I do like it as a game too because as a game, you can make the choices. I feel about this as I feel of all art games, inspired. I loved your game and I think it deserves a good 4.5

I understand that this wasn't supposed to be a traditional game, but if so WHY did you count clicks and time?!? And furthermore, WHY ARE WE SUPPOSED TO LIKE THIS MAN? Are we supposed to be happy when he murders a woman he loves and then refuses to kill himself? If he had said "NO!" BEFORE murdering her, we might like him. But if this is a game about the "illusion" of free will, then why does the character seemingly gain it at the end of the game? And why is it supposed to be good for him to "find love, in death"? He MURDERED her!

If you classify this as an "interactive fiction" game, then it is the equivalent of a First person shooter with no bullets in the guns. We are given no background for the characters, no reason to like them, and no resolution for the conflict in the end (or at least no catharsis).
The music was also very grating, and the speed at which everything moved was unbearable. The music was also VERY repetitive very quickly, and served to destroy the atmosphere rather than foster its creation.
I will admit, I enjoyed the art and graphics. The rain especially was rather impressively well animated. This is the reason I am giving half a star rather than none. I would like to see if you can create something with better writing in the future, because the game felt like it had so much potential. I played all the way through because I was hoping there would be some reversal of pacing and quality, but sadly there was not.
Please keep putting as much effort as obviously went into this into your future games, if you do they will be some of the best in the genre.

AlanZucconi responds:

Hi! You highlight a lot of questions... I will try to respond to them, but keep in mind that many aspects of the game are indeed "open", so that you can find your own answers.

A constant element of RAPTUS gameplay is... frustration! :-) Especially the one that arises from the slowness of character that is absolutely a feature. :-) Other games adopt this technique, such us "Pathos" by "BitBattalion". Thus, clicks are an indication of your frustration through the game. I didn't noticed that someone could be distracted by it. Maybe, for the next game, I will try to come up with some alternative solution. Any idea? :)

Nope, you're not "supposed to loke this man". Well, maybe. The game has a very strong content, and for this reason is hard not to take a stand. This explains the final decision. Lot of people (you can read previous comments!) felt very sympathetic for Him, and decided to save Him. Other ones (like you!) felt so disturbed by such a "wrong" behaviour that simply develop a strong hate. If you have one or the other, it's fine. :-) It means that the game works! :p

* SPOILER *

At the end the character decided not to be affected by voices any more. But it is not free will because ...you are still the one who is controlling Him. :) You're using a different controller, but it's still you. This happens way to many times in life... :-p

Important aspects of Love are possession and jealousy. Love itself is not something "pure", but has a biological root that is much more close to "own the other" than to "make them happy". When love becomes sick, several people can behave exactly as Him. You can find a lot of husbands of boyfriends that claimed, after a murder, that "now she's really mine because no one can have her the way I did". It is of course a pathology, but it is a more realistic and "grounded" way of describing an "alternative" love story. A very sick and disturbing one. :-)
