THIS GAME IS LESS THAN 12 MINUTES CAPS-LOCK. It IS a demo, so there's a few issues unresolved, but I'm working to fix them as I get feedback!
----
--edit 2-- HOLY SH*T! Front page! Whoooo!! Thanks Tom and thanks Newgrounds! And yes, I'm looking at all your comments, really appreciate the feedback. :D
--edit-- tweaked some balance issues, upped the framerate.
CRU is a side scrolling shooter/exploration game. This is a SHORT ASS DEMO, which means I can only show a bit of the exploration, the bulk of the demo is the shoot-em-up section.

Controls: (once you get to the shooting part!)
_----==** Z: shoot X: shield C: charge beam **==----_
The beam gauge charges when you kill an enemy; If you slaughter them like the beast you are, you'll charge it up, dude.

ANYWAYS have fun ng!

Pretty cool.
The boss gave me a bit of trouble with it's not-so-typical attacks but I pulled through (somehow, and only after lossing several lives to that stone-launch-from-behind thingy).
Seeing as this is a Beta might I suggest that you change the controlls?
As in "Please don't use X and Z because in europe a lot of people have something like a QWERTZ-keyboard - aka our Z is where your Y is. Doesb't make controlling exactely easier. ASDF or maybe even JKL or something should work on both kinds.

I like the graphics. Maybe because I like the whole "floaty islands" idea. If people tell you they don't like it they shouldn't be playing ti in the first place . . .
I guess you can do a lot more with colour if you'd want to.

you lay so much focus on the graphics, which look really interessting, but didn't put effort in the control, there are no physics at all at the ships movement, it's just about moving it some pixels up or down, without any acceleration or breaks, it just doesn't feel good..

Well first of all, I dont really like these kind of games. But for me it's just another person trying to make "that kind of game". Its not original and people doing it all the time.. Trying to make a weird or disturbed atmosphere for example the game closure. Sincerely it was very very boring.. The shooting wasn't that fun.
I dont like the way its drawn, it's weird and make no sense. You know what would be original that human plays a role and your just on earth no fantasy bullshit. Thats something no one does around here.
But well thats my opinion. I would like it if it wasnt all weird and stuff.. The ship im flying what is it? how is it hold together? Why dont just make a space ship that makes sense.. It may be fun for some people.. but every game here on newgrounds does that.. Its not cool or original.. kinda pretentious..
I'm sorry, but i found it pretty boring.. I hope I helped you..

I make games as an escape. If you want something 'down to earth,' I might suggest going to your local DMV or filing your taxes.

Its good, but again, its just a demo. A suggestion I would like to make is either respawn invulnerability or a forced respawn location in the middle. This is because while fighting the boss, the part where he attacks from behind he can end up killing you multiple times before you even have a chance of moving away due to the fact that you respawn where you died- right where the boss has located itself. Other than that the mechanics of the game seem fine and make a decent demo. I would like to see where you take the gameplay, whether it be the type of game where the player levels up or not, whether it has shifting gameplay, or if it has a major plot. I also look forward to how you deal with future graphics such as leaving the game as a mostly colorless experience or if you are going to add some kind of coloring to add to the personality that is already present. Overall, this is pretty good for a demo. 4/5 stars, and I look forward to seeing this evolve into a full game.

LordDF responds:

It should respawn invulnerable, but you might be experiencing a glitch. I'll look into that. Secretly, I think it's fun to kill my players in frustrating ways once in a while. >:)

Thx for review!

This was pretty cool. Needs a lot of work, but obviously it's just a demo...

Cool designs overall, and a really cool use of colors. I especially like the designs of the charge bar and the boss.
Every once in a while I mistook a background object for a foreground object and wasn't sure if I should dodge or shoot it. Not sure if this is intentional in the design.

The intro was really confusing. It was telling me all these controls and was thinking "Ok, when do I get that item?" I'd thought it was going to be a platformer.

Major suggestion, change the name. I understand that you're referring to standard lined notebook paper, but "College Ruled Universe" is just too confusing. I should say, the correct meaning is not the first thing that jumps to mind, even when I know what it is.

LordDF responds:

Rlght, I'm starting to consider a name change to something more catchy. Maybe...doodleverse? Notebook Adventure? Hmm, if you think of any good ones, PM me! I may just use it.

And yea, I'd like to show more in the intro, but I couldn't purely due to my lack of ability as a programmer. The final will expand immensely on that!
