But wasn't jenova the one to kill aeris ?
Well, that's a debateable topic. Spehiroth, asleep in the Northern Crater, was able to send his own consciousness through pieces of Jenova scattered throughout. Which is why every time post Nibelheim you see Sephiroth, you immediately fight Jenova and he is reduced to the piece of Jenova he possessed. So, I guess it was Technically Jenova, being used by Sephiroth.
