Pulled into an unknown world, a young Wizard must master magical spells, fight dangerous enemies, gain powerful abilities, and search a mystical land in order to find his way home.
Arzea was originally created for a Ludum Dare 22 (a 48 hour game programming competition). The game was then extended to include more content and better music.
Control the wizard with the arrow keys or ASDW, and using your mouse to aim and shoot your spells. [Tab] or [Escape] will open the menu, [M] will open the map, and [Shift] will open the spell change wheel.

It was fun to play, for sure... a bit easy, though. I only died twice, and both times the death was caused by lava. One of those deaths was intentional, too; I wanted to see if lava was an instant kill, so I deliberately jumped into some. Because the map is rather expansive, it would have been nice to have a more helpful map display; the in-game map was only marginally helpful, especially after beating the game and having large portions of it wiped out. I have to wonder if a level cap exists, though; I am currently at level 104, and I am still able to earn EXP and level up. My spells charge almost instantly and do severe damage; the final boss is a pushover with spell #6 (I forget what it's called). The water spell is my favourite, though... excellent crowd control, even if it's unpredictable.
One thing I liked was giving the player the ability to gain new skills as he leveled up, even if those skills aren't made immediately apparent. What I'm referring to is the ability to kill the boxes and the enemies that are sort of circular and shoot out tons of bullets. At first, the boxes are unkillable, and the circular enemies can only be killed by one specific element as indicated by their colour. But, at some point, the boxes become vulnerable and can be killed, and the circular enemies can be killed by any spell. It was definitely helpful adding those abilities into the game, as it made trekking from one end of the map and back searching for powerups and fragments much easier.
Overall, a pretty fun game, even if the story is a bit lacking.

Medals don't work, and both endings are kinda... meh. Otherwise, awesome game!

Great games, but medals don't works. Got only 2 instead of 8.

Solid core, but the game never really has that "evolving" feel that similar "Metroidvania" games develop, which hurts it a lot.
The game has a very "samey" feel throughout. You progress by jumping higher and grabbing two different types of barrier removers, rather than unlocking genuine new skills or using the environment. There's little reason to use anything but the fireball outside of clearing very specific barriers, which is a shame. I really liked the water-freezing spell and feel that if the other spells had a bit more "general use" application like that, it'd have felt more like I was gaining in power rather than merely engaging in redundancy.
And sadly, "redundancy" is also the key word for the enemies. While we get a few new types late in the game, by then you've faced the same basically-three types a thousand times. Instead of simply flooding halls with the same foes we've faced all game, adding new foes unique to each area requiring a little strategy to best would have really made this shine. The "element-weakness" turrets late in the game were the start of a nice touch, but shortly after encountering them I leveled up to the point where any of my spells would wipe them out.
The graphics are solid, the music is great, the controls are tight... but the game just needs more variety for the amount of time we have to invest in it to get through.
Oh, and yeah... for some reason, despite having met the requirements, a lot of the NG Medals have not unlocked for me.
