Skippy was clearly an abusive aspect...
..of Luna's personality representing physical, verbal, and possibly (absolutely) sexual abuse by her father, while her mother just stood by pretending nothing was wrong and preparing scones for her next Canterlot society art social.
Yes, this was a very deep and meaningful psychoanalysis of the deep-rooted psychological issues of abuse and abandonment that led Luna into creating the homicidal second personality, Nightmare Moon.
