Someone has to have said this, and if not, I'm alone. I couldn't find a way to change the settings. The computer I use sucks, even though it's pretty new, and this game made it lag a bit at times. If I could only tweak some things, this would be a ten. But I can't find any way to have a more enjoyable experience.

Squize responds:

The game is already in low quality mode mate, so we didn't add a quality setting option as it wouldn't have made any difference ( Running it in high quality actually makes the jets of smoke that come out of the walls glitch ).
Thanks for the review.

Great work that needs a little bit of tuning

My first thought was when I played the first levels: "Alien Breed!". I was impressed by this game's quality and it can be clearly seen that effort was definitely put into this game project.

The good
* I like the music (fitting tracks) that kicks in from time to time, mood setting too.
* Great art and graphics, really good work! I looks very much professional.
* Nice level design!
* Interesting story even though it is cliché it wasn't bad and it had your personal touch. It is good that you try to use different methods for conveying the story to the player through the PDA:s/info discs, mission briefing and the assistant giving orders/suggestions in-game etc.
* Great concept art and I like the title screen, really nice! The Game Over screen was nice too though overused as an story ending screen.
* Movable objects was a nice touch.
* Nice looking meta awards (not just cropped pictures but actual design).
* Good looking main menu, GUI and in-game menu.
* Overall good work!

What I believe could be improved upon:
I believe this is a game of quality and as such it deserves more scrutiny than usual, so that you can improve the quality on your next project (or update the current one).
* Certain plot parts was a little vague such as why did the protagonist really have to blow up the ground facility in the first place?
* A very few tiles in the level design looked odd as if misplaced, it is of a minor concern but cosmetic.
* The challenges is an optional element for players but there are those who persistently hunt for meta gaming awards because it's either fun or addiction, and it must be a torture to complete all the game's challenges, especially the swarm challenges. I suggest tweaking and balancing as of now they are insanely dreary to go through, I quickly gave up that part as it is not worth to spend so many hours on 100 arbitrary points. Remember, if it is implemented then it must be reasonably obtainable too. Time is a valuable commodity that needs serious consideration.
* The aliens do not have any kind of attack animation and it breaks the immersion a bit as it looks like they just glue themselves onto the player and look like statues.
* The first level should perhaps only have had the small crawling aliens. By introducing each type for each level ahead keeps the game a bit more interesting and will have an element of surprise for new players. Don't give away so much in the beginning of a game, let players encounter fresh elements as they progress.
* The alien that hides in the dark just stands there and takes fire from a distance, If attacked it should retaliate, this is a cheat provided by the game rules, and makes it a bit too easy. They should act like predators not scripted pixels.
* Better pathfinding. Enemies can sometimes be lured into a door frame and simply stand there while I pick them off.
* Player respawns at the same spot in the Swarm levels, makes it annoying to face 10 enemies in one cluster and fending them off isn't easy.
* The China Lake is probably glitchy. XP awarded from using the CL seems awkward as a direct hit gives lower points as if using a gun while aiming on a wall "blows" them up and hence more points.

* Some numerical errors in the challenge list accessed through the terminal, like -100% or -200% when completed.
* Spawn holes that pops up traps the player if the character stands on top of it. Last level has a spawn hole that I got trapped in by simply walking into it.
* Explosive barrels doesn't damage enemies as much if they are beside one, but kills them if they are a bit away from it.

One last thought, that isn't only about this game but all the lately released flash games here, I think it is time to start listing CPU requirements for playing a game. This game can be a bit bothersome to play through on a slower computer.

I liked it and playing the story mode was fun. I hope to see a sequel soon (or a even a trilogy?)! Keep the great work up! Why not try and sell it on the iPhone/Android market?

Wow, now that's a review. Wow.

It's stupidly late here so I'll edit this reply tomorrow, just wanted to say thanks now.

Nice, but...

I am pretty stuck on 5/7-the Mainframe level. I hacked all 4 consoles, but I am having trouble escaping. I give it a 8/10 and 5/5.

The character that you play needs to move a LOT faster. With some of his guns, like the 3rd-I think the SMG-it takes him at least 2 seconds to reload. I think that is a bit too much time.

At least I made the High-Score list, for now. All the way at the freaking bottom, but I didn't finish yet so eh.

Good game, wish it were better.

-Top notch graphics for a flash game.
-Music and sound effects that go so well with the game.
-Great presentation/extras (i.e. diaries that you pick up, detailed explanation for each item).
-Story that sucks you into the game.
-Varied gameplay (from sneaking to all-out brawl to beat the clock)
-Overall very addicting once you start (you feel like you have to see the ending).

-Serious lag quite a few times in my gaming laptop. There should be a quality adjustment (L/M/H).
-Endless monsters pop out of holes, which is annoying to say the least, and the fact you can't step on their holes means trouble when you are surrounded or retreating, which is very annoying.
-Boss was way too easy.
-Not much incentive to level up, other than seeing ranks.
-Lack of worthwhile customization (like armor). Existing customization (weapons) is not that good. I felt no difference between some of the weapons, like not-upgraded-at-all assault rifle and fully-upgraded pulse rifle. Should be a greater distinction of ability between weapons.

One big problem I have about this game is weapons. For example, Vulcan, which is supposed to be the best weapon in the game (according to price, description, and level requirement), but it actually is the worst. Vulcan takes too much time to start, and you usually take damage before trying to kill things, esp. one that pops out from the dark. Was useful only in the boss battle. I think it should've been the cheapest weapons because it sure shoots like one.

Final Word: High-quality, very ambitious flash game from Squize and luxregina. This game has so much potential and was too much fun (more mature than vast majority of your everyday flash game), that this game is a must-play for flash-game fans. However, I wish what I found to be those minor problems would be gone for next Outpost game because I can't wait what the next chapter of this story will be. Keep up the good work, Squize and luxregina, you 2 are doing great.

Squize responds:

Excellent review, thanks.
The whole weapons thing is subjective, I'm a pulse rifle boy as it's a good all round weapon, other people swear by the SMG and hate the shotgun.
The Vulcan comes into it's own in large areas with lots of baddies, not tight corridors where they can jump out at you.

I think I may turn the right button menu back on. I turned it off as it's not needed as the game runs in low quality anyway, but I'm having to say that about once a page now :)

We did talk about custom armour, but we just ran out of time.

Thanks again mate.
