A Breakout for Goremaster
I wasn't a big fan of the first two Goremaster shorts. They seemed to borrow too much from other sources, lacking a truly original flair. You heaped some outlandish deaths upon the protagonists. But the gore didn't overcome the weakness of the story execution in those early episodes, despite some interesting story ideas.
You overcame that weakness with this flash. Instead of making the Goremaster character feel derivative of South Park-like humor, this episode felt like it truly stood on its own. The narrative of the poem is a good conduit. It seemed to free you up to go in a different direction with the humor, and make the humor more of your own. The only point where the humor seemed to drag is with the appearance of Skullprince at the end. It dragged on a bit, and the voice acting felt a bit flat. But you didn't rely on some of the humor devices with Skullprince that you did in the first two episodes. So even though the appearance was mainly in voiceover, the character felt more original.
There were some scenes, like the tree scene at the beginning, where the shading/color palate seemed off a bit. And when your characters move, there is sometimes a lack of fluidity (most noticeable in the "launch" sequence.) But there is improvement in the drawing from the previous episodes.
The best thing is that you didn't rely too much on the gore. It's obviously central to the character. He is Goremaster after all. But letting the humor and parody carry the day made the creative deaths all that much more amusing. Sometimes restraint is good; after all, you don't want to just be making another Madness flash with nothing going for them but a high death count, do you? (Maybe you do; I'm just saying though...)
You're moving in a good direction with this short. When I first played it, I admit I was indifferent to seeing just another Goremaster short. But Goremaster's Xmas won me over. Keep pressing forward with the originality shown here. I'm looking forward to the next episode to see where you go with it.
