Oíche Mhaith (pronouced "Ee-ha why") is a short game by Increpare and I.
This should really be in the "Art Games" section. Very thought provoking.
... I had an inner struggle to decide how I was going to rate this and what I would write... After the initial part and what happened, I was filled with such a seething rage that I damn near picked up my laptop, smashed it into my TV for putting that kind of stuff through my mind.
On the one side, there was the absolute hatred I felt for each of them. I have seen what abusive families can do and what happens... but this is just... GRAAAHHH!!! And because of that, I almost stopped playing altogether and said "Good!, I'm glad the pricks are f**king dead! Didn't have to shoot the dog though!" and it ALMOST became a 0/5...
But then I decided to grit my teeth and continue playing till I found the right combo... Seeing how each of the characters reacted with each other's personality... Mom's guilt, Dad's slowly slipping sanity, Dog's feelings of missing the deceased brother... Of course they are still deeper than that, but I will spare my full thoughts...
However, I did have an issue with the ending that didn't quite make sense... Yes, it all turned out to be a dream, but I do have 1 issue. When the parents were apologizing and saying that they didn't show enough care and that they were sorry, why did the mom say "Our family is finally whole again" when the daughter is still alive? I understand what was meant to be portrayed there, but it came out just a wee bit wrong. All in all, it is a game I would recommend to those that could handle something like this.. or completely naive people.
P.S.- My original review was just going to say "Who else stopped playing after the pricks died?", but that would've made me sound like a douche...
I can't really describe how I'm feeling right now.
This game made me think, even after playing it. It's message is obvious, and watching this story is like getting the message hammered into your head with a sledgehammer. The music fits the scenes very nicely, the only thing I can complain about is the annoying sound effect you hear while changing the room.
I could say a thousand words about what I like and what I don't like about this game, but let me reduce it to this:
Thank you. This game was beautiful in a horrible way.
FUCK MY LIFE
Definitely one of the best games I have played. Not only for the interactivity, but also for the music, story, and message it gives. Truly a work of art.
A game about people and their reflections
Pure minimalist puzzle game about solving spatial issues
Short visual novel about a mysterious girl hiding a dark secret
