Addictive

Wow, those controls are surprisingly hard to master, considering that they are based 45 degrees to the true planes that you're working along. I was really struggling to get going and then the spike traps really got me on the first run, so maybe I'll come back to them later... much later.

Not that I'm put off, this game is pretty neat, with good puzzles, decent music and pretty funny graphics, which keep everything together, giving a very nice presentation to the final product, which I'm surprised to say has not achieved anything spectacular, with a score of just over 3.5, no medals and all of this despite having medals attached to it! Surprising, to say the least.

If I were to suggest anything major, I'd rotate the screen, so that the controls are easier, because I've played a few games in my time and I think it would make the game easier to play and therefore more accessible to the masses, should they be after a good Indiana Jones / Ancient Egyptian themed game.

Just a quick aside, when you get resurrected, it's almost like you were cuboy, which I found a nice way of flattering Messrs Arbuckle and Dennis, for their aforementioned work.

Keep up the good work, give us more games and medals to play with, I'll be back to see if I can achieve the medals for this momentarily!

Yeah, the 45 degreesness was a terrible idea. It looks cool, and I'm well versed in old isometric games which had these sort of controls Mario RPG etc so its the norm to me, not realising how different it is to control for anyone else...

Rotating the entire thing 45 degrees is easy in code, remove lines and tada, the problem is all of the art assets require being drawn at a different angle so it wont be an update to the game. If there is a sequel however, it will be straight on!

Cheers

Nice game

This is a pretty nice game. A mixture of Indiana Jones movies and Sokoban, the game. The riddles are ranging from very easy to pretty hard, so the long time motivation definitely is there.

Maybe the tutorial is a bit too long. I was hoping to finally start the "real" game, but room after room another explanation popped up, telling me what to look for and stuff. Maybe it would be better to give a basic tutorial, then have the player play the first set of levels and then increase difficulty later on with additional traps and switches and some more explanations. That way the player won't feel drowned in tutorials.

Also, the view is a bit weird. I have to push up to move up and right on the screen. This can get confusing and sometimes I found myself pushing statues that I never wanted to push, just because I got confused with the view and the controls. Maybe a full top view or a view from a "straight line" (where "up" is "up" on the screen) would be better here.

Yeah, the tutorials where an awkward one because I felt I didn't want to cram a lot of features into single levels at the beginning when they are being introduced or there is too many obstacles that the player wont understand being thrown into the mix at one time, that was my logic anyway. Can never get tutorial balancing right!

Difficult fun

Never really been a fan of games with an isometric view since it takes me a bit of time to get used to the up/down/left/right thing since the screen is diagonal instead of what I am used to seeing and playing with. The music used here does have a feel good, easy, and fun feel to it though as it gets you into wanting to play it.

The graphics were pretty nice and the way the character is reconstructed after dying is pretty cool. Kind of took a bit of time to figure out I could click on where I wanted to go to which kind of makes it easier for me to play the game anyways. The graphics were good though and you figure out that some things need to be determined before you even begin to do the level.

The game play is as I said a bit difficult for me as I am not truly used to this style of game play sadly. Knowing most of the buttons only activate with certain colors though is quite helpful and only being able to move things after others have been moved is also good to know.

I suppose this game isn't truly something I would enjoy sadly. It is a rather good game though. Good setup and all.

Overall, isometric game, click and playing, it's fun though. Good work here. Nice medals.

ye this game has made me realise that with these games at 45 degrees with keyboard controls are just fundamentally flawed :p

Glad someone has comment on the music! Pretty chuffed with what Michelle produced for this game, not many 0 budget games boast 5 pieces of music to it!

Very nice

This was also one of the hardest of the requests to review for me.

I liked how the first levels were with scientists and other researchers, and the later levels were with no people. It gives more of a feeling that you're going through a cript on your own.

I did find the puzzles a bit boring at the start. I'm not very good at these puzzle games, but I could just walk through the first seven levels without thinking. After that it got really hard though. So maybe you could make the difficulty curve a bit less steep?

The only real negative point I can think of with this game is the control scheme. Although it's an angle in which you can see everything, I'd rather have a map which let you walk down if you press down, and not that you walk to the bottom-left. Most of the time where failed was because I pressed a wrong button.

It's still a really nice game though, and the majority of the things are just fine. The addition of a level editor is great, and I love the large amount of puzzles there are. I didn't get very far in the game either, but certainly liked the puzzles I did complete.

Yeah, I chose the 'isometric' view because it looks pretty and and stuff but in the end it turns out to be fairly impractical as I ruled out using the mouse to click to positions because it wouldn't work on later puzzles (all the ice and sand tiles). It should have just been kept straight on instead of rotated.. but ach well!

Because of this controls issue though we made the first few levels simple so try allow players enough time to get the hang of the controls so it was difficult to balance stupidly simple but still kind of fun at the beginning.

It is a shame I feel that it is the later levels are where the puzzles begin to shine because the more complex elements just can't be introduced in earlier levels or it becomes too hard to fast (which is apparently still present!)

Cheers!

It's hard for me to review this...

It's kind of hard for me to review this in an unbiased manner because I simply hate puzzle like games. I really didn't get that far into because I kind of get bored easily with them, but by no means will I allow that influence my rating. It's something that I don't find fair. If someone doesn't like a certain game style they shouldn't be giving it a low score because the game is actually high quality. In normal situations I simply wouldn't review this flash, but since it was requested in the RRC I'm kind of pushed into it a little bit. :P

~ Animation/Graphics ~

Very nice clean cut graphics all around. They were very simple, but fit perfect in the game. I liked that you added a dying sequence instead of the bad guy just flashing and fading away. The only thing that I can recommend to improve in this area was to perhaps have different death sequences. For example, the spikes coming up could pierce through the body while the arrows could stick in the head while the character slowly tips over from the blow.

~ Story/Content ~

The story was simple as well. To someone who doesn't like it then I'm slightly bored, but to someone who enjoys puzzle games then I'm sure they start having fun only a couple of levels into it. I literally got to the point with the arrows and I told myself that if I died here I wouldn't continue playing. I got shot by an arrow (not in the knee) and did exactly that. Sadly I didn't get too far into the story to actually know the cool things that you implemented so I'm sorry about that.

The medals should add replay value for a lot of people. I probably won't come back and visit this again though because, while I do enjoy getting medals, I rather do it on a grinding experience gaining like game instead of something that makes me think to hard. Durp, I must be too dumb for puzzle games.

~ Audio ~

The music was a perfect fit for the submission and sounded good all around with nice quality. The only thing I can think of here is to add a voice actor! I think the game would have been slightly more entertaining if the people you talked to literally talked to you along with the text.

~ Overall ~

Boring for me, but actually a very high quality game that deserves more views and reviews than it has. Keep on working hard and keep on creating flash games. Good day sir.

Thanks dude,

Appreciate that you objectively looked at the game and can see its merits despite hating the genre:P
But at the same time you would be the kind of person I should be trying to egg on and entice, and warm up to the game, so it is good to know which aspects you find boring etc!
