Was This Made in 2011 or 2005?

You've been doing Madness shorts for how many years now? Why is it that you haven't shown much growth as an artist? This could have easily been made 5-6 years ago and no one would be able to tell the difference. It's almost as if you didn't even try with this one.

It's still the same formula, which in the .5 series is stripped down to its most basic elements: good guys proceed through a series of corridors and kill bad guys. There's always been a necessary suspension of belief for the Madness shorts: why can't an organization that can afford to build and develop this level of technology arm their guards with anything more than nightsticks and axes? And then have those guards charge the good guy who is coming at them with a BFG? And when you do pity them and give them guns, why do the bad guys never shoot first? And why are they all the same, no matter that the different costumes and outfits would signify a difference in skils/abilities? In this short, those rules of "illogic" are really exaggerated. The whole thing comes off as silly instead of exciting. There's no tension. No thrills. Enter room, kill bad guys with an IQ of 5, leave room, rinse, repeat. There is no "Madness" in this short. It's almost laughably bad.

Fine details in the background cannot disguise the fact that you've really developed into a one-trick pony. And I hate to say that because you are a great animator. How much longer are you going to keep going back to the well? The .5 series has big gaps in the plot and has left things unexplained. This short in particular has nothing new or interesting in it. It recycles from previous Madness shorts, and lacks any of the set pieces or outlandishness that make the main series moderately watchable. Of course the main series has become so convoluted that it is on the verge of self-parody.

Have you really hit a brick wall? Have we already seen you peak as an artist? God, I hope not. It's like you have stuck with the same formula for the past six years because it works and your fan base just goes bananas for it. The original Madness short all those years ago displayed such a wicked sense of humor and irony, as well as some cool cartoonish violence and action, where anything can and was a weapon. That's all gone now. A Madness short made in 2011 is the same as a Madness short from 2005. There should be marked improvement in skills, style, and storytelling ability over that much time. It seems as if you've actually regressed a bit in your talents. I hope you take this as constructive criticism and not just me being a hater.

If I were to offer improvement, there are two things you can do. Retire Madness, or inject something new to shake up the stale formula you've fallen into. Give the bad guys some brains. Add more randomness. Put your heroes in true peril. Stop reincarnating everyone! Anything. What's the saying we use in the business world? Innovate or get out of the way. You've reached the point with Madness where you need to make that decision. The fanboys are still going to vote 5, but it's going to be a very hollow 5 indeed.

I get it!

It took me a while of watching and rewatching but I get what you were going for with this and I like it!

MC10 was an amazing show of magic powers and that stuff, but it was a different flavor from 'original recipe' Madness, which is very good on its own merits. I saw this as a simple return to the quick-witted gunplay that might have been taken for granted as more magic got poured into the story. This was a well-worked no BS movie about dudes shooting each other in a nifty manner and it works extremely well at that. The teamwork of Sanford and Deimos was great and I liked the enemies' realistic reactions to them with the setting being a party at an upgrade facility.

The micro text is still amazing. I love how the detail was so fine that you put a title on the CD in the stereo! Can't read just what it says though. There was just enough story going on to satisfy the people who still enjoy the overarching story.

I also finally get the ATP. They're androids! Or cyborgs at least. Why mustard blood? It's not blood, it's robot shit!

All that said, I didn't quite like how this movie didn't start off directly from the end of the last one as all of the previous Madness episodes since Depredation. The cut in time is a little uncomfortable and I hope what caused it gets conclusively answered, especially since there is another timeline running as the .5 series progresses. Also, being the nitpicker I am, I want to see the origin of the rest of their wardrobe, as you were already explaining most of it already.

Keep up the excellent work! You fans love you!
