I'm in an art appreciation course, and our final project is to recreate a piece of art in another medium. Oddly, as soon as it was announced, I thought of Rene Magritte's "Treachery of Images" (the painting of a pipe with the words "This is not a pipe" in French under the pipe) and Mario. Originally, I wanted a wild, psychedelic video to play when Mario entered the pipe, but I opted for the Negative world with some eerie text like in the finished project.

The original "Treachery of Images" seemed to lack TREACHERY to me, so I made the cyclops-demon-antagonist to add some mischief. I also thought it would be interesting not only to play with the "This is not a pipe", but more so playing on what players expect. This is why I tried to copy the original level set up as close as possible.

This is my first completed Flixel project, I have another larger one that has been in the works for a couple of months, but I'm relatively new at Flash and Flixel. It's a lot more intuitive than I thought it would be - I've never been very good at coding.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

[EDIT] I accidentally uploaded a version of the game with the super secret bonus as the default scene! The cats out of the bag! Sorry for the mistake!

Brilliant Art Application! SPOILERS AHEAD

I've always been a fan of 'Treachery of Images' and using Video Games as a medium was clever, especially one as iconic as Mario (loved the pipe pun, btw) they've always been underrated as a possible art form.
I also enjoyed the GLaDOS-esque way the game taunted you for being gullible.
The only problems I found with this is that while falling through space, the pacing of the text was a little bit slow and the game was very short and ended rather abruptly.

I appreciate the review! I'm glad it went over well. The text pacing was difficult for me to figure out - it's hard to tell if I'm reading too fast because I know what it says already. Another thing that bugs me about the text is that it distracts from the sprite, which very subtly erodes away as the scene goes on. There's a lot to take into account when making games!

Thanks again for the review!

Want more of this!

Even thought it was very short, I thought this was a very unique and amazing concept, and I would love to see more!

There's more in the works! Like I mentioned before, I'm very new at this, but I'm learning. :)
