I'm in an art appreciation course, and our final project is to recreate a piece of art in another medium. Oddly, as soon as it was announced, I thought of Rene Magritte's "Treachery of Images" (the painting of a pipe with the words "This is not a pipe" in French under the pipe) and Mario. Originally, I wanted a wild, psychedelic video to play when Mario entered the pipe, but I opted for the Negative world with some eerie text like in the finished project.

The original "Treachery of Images" seemed to lack TREACHERY to me, so I made the cyclops-demon-antagonist to add some mischief. I also thought it would be interesting not only to play with the "This is not a pipe", but more so playing on what players expect. This is why I tried to copy the original level set up as close as possible.

This is my first completed Flixel project, I have another larger one that has been in the works for a couple of months, but I'm relatively new at Flash and Flixel. It's a lot more intuitive than I thought it would be - I've never been very good at coding.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

[EDIT] I accidentally uploaded a version of the game with the super secret bonus as the default scene! The cats out of the bag! Sorry for the mistake!

Nice concept, the game was a little too short, but had alot of details.

How to get the "Super Secret Bonus Scene".

while mario fall into the abyss, type hottub, wait the screen to
fade in white and them type thisisnotatub
or thistub and press Z, after that, just keep pressing Z.

I like the concept, but the graphic suck !Even for a super mario bros first version!

I stared at the abyss and it dissolved Mario.

Very nice twist on the mario and artform genre. It was also nice to see Mario be turned into some kind of negative demon. The most interesting part though was the black and white scene with Mario's body slowly dissolving away.

I'm so relieved that someone caught that :) I thought the text would completely distract anyone from even checking on poor Mario.

Something's not right

The idea is pretty good, but the game really is too short. It's almost not a game at all... It's more lika an interactive video. You shoud work on it more.
P.S. I'm Italian and "This is not a pipe" is translated "Questo non รจ un tubo".

I did consider filing this under video for that exact reason. I'd like to work on it more, but I have a couple of other final projects that I need to show some love - maybe in the future.

Thanks for the accurate translation! Right now I'm relying on Google as a translator :/ Although my bad translation makes the statement even more accurate in a way ;)
