Good, but annoying

The game is fun, and rather addicting, which is in itself an good combination. That said, there were a few parts of it that pissed me off.

First and foremost, the lava kills you when you haven't even touched it. That distance issue made some of the jumping parts such a bitch to actually get past that I was very upset.

Second, and also pretty high on the list, is that the lava can barely be differentiated from the background. It has a slight pattern, but that's not terribly helpful. There should at least be a difference in color, if not an obvious "top" of the lava, so you can see where it starts. One level in particular (16) combined these two for me in such aggravating ways I eventually had to stop playing, because I know I will come to hate the game if I don't go away for a little while.

That said, the game is fun. It just could use some fixing up.

Joelasticot responds:

Hey - as I said in another response, the acid will only kill you if your feet are 10 pixels into it or lower. I made it so that the SFX spawns above the acid because if it spawned on the player, since he's 10 px or more into acid, it would overlap with the tile and look bad.

Now I agree with the acid not popping out a lot on the later levels' backgrounds. I wish we would have done something about that but the backgrounds looked too good to darken!

Thanks for the review

Level 18

Level 18 is absolutely ungodly hard. Not hard, not very hard, but downright mindblowingly insane. It took me over 50 attempts (possibly 100) to get past it. The delay in the jumping mechanism and the almost static path you take in the air is tormenting. It feels like the stiff jumping mechanism is the biggest obstacle in this game. Which is why I am taking a star off your otherwise great game. Impaired controls is often called "fake difficulty" in game design. This game does not in any way need this to be challenging. It is extremely hard and stressful as is.
You're losing another star because of an item. Once I actually beat the sadistic 18th level (After having memorized pretty much every single pixel in the entire level and timed every single jump to not waste a single millisecond) I mashed through the next 3-4 levels in 2 minutes. Simply because I was given an item that made me walk through acid pools (I thought they were pools of discount mayonnaise because of the title, but this item told me otherwise. Was kind of disappointed).
Talk about a 180 degree turn in terms of difficulty. The ending was pretty anti-climatic, but I get the joke. In any case, great game. Extremely challenging, but I could do without the shitty jumping mechanism and the god-mode boots in level 19+

Joelasticot responds:

Sorry you feel that way about the jumping and the acid boots! We didn't think the slight delay before a jump increased the difficulty but now it seems to be one of the major complains. Also the acid boots are there to give players a break, but they do get a reward if they can beat the final levels without them. Thanks for the review!
