A terrifying journey into zombie-infested Hell
Last Stand: Union City ticks all the boxes of a good web-based zombie game, or any zombie game for that matter. It's customization of character in both appearance and skills, the unique exploration methods make the game just that much more expansive and realistic and the weaponry gameplay is exciting, exhiliharting and tactical, easily earning a Front Page position.
However, some proportionately minute annoyances still appear, as they do in all games. I didn't find the flashlight until half way through the game, as I never saw a message indicating I ever even had one. Some staircase transitions require you to click on a very certain point, which may be difficult when swarmed by zombies. And of course there is considerable lag in some parts of the game, but that is to be expected.
All in all, a fantastic creation. I think this game will be credited as one of Newground's greatest zombie games to date and will definitely live up to, if not surpass the reputation of it's two predecessors.
Very well done. I hope to see more releases from this creator.
I have to say.
Every time you guys come out with a new Last Stand, it always gets more complex. This was a huge, but welcome jump from the last 2. I enjoyed the RPG elements and the references to Fallout. I didn't really like the huge waves of zombies that fell from the ceiling, they were cool at first but got kind of annoying towards the end. All in all, it was a good game.
Well that quarantine went well, huh!?
To be honest, I thought this game was a steaming pile of shit within my first few minutes playing it.
...But then I just couldn't stop playing the steaming pile of shit...
...And then eventually I started enjoying the steamy pile of shit.
It's been a while since I've had a chance to play a game with decent customization options. And this did have enough to keep me pleased. It's not often that I get a chance to run around, swinging a battle-axe, while wearing nothing but my underwear and a HAZMAT mask.
Also, the buddy-system was well placed this time around. At no point was my companion dragging me down, and in a couple of instances, he/she ended up saving my sorry ass.
And for what it's worth, I enjoyed survival mode. While I certainly had no problem finding food or medical supplies throughout the game, sleep was a bitch. (In a good way.) After a while of murdering, I had to go off and snooze for a couple of hours. While the abundance of food could be fixed for another game, the emphasis of personal care in survival mode is a welcome addition.
Oh, and Jack's appearance in the game was a nice touch.
There are four problems in the game, though:
1. You need to get rid of the weapon dealers. They're ultimately useless, since you'll likely have a better weapon then what's available by the time you get to them. (In my case, I got the aforementioned battle-axe before I got the Katana. $900 down the drain.) And, for what it's worth, it was far more satisfying to pick up a rare and awesome weapon from a lockbox or dead zombie.
2. Beforehand I mentioned that my partner saved my ass a couple of times. And I literally mean only a couple of times. This game bears no challenge, unless you happen to be in a situation in which zombies come in through a roof and pin you up against a wall. And that DOES happen. And it is a WELCOME challenge. However, any other zombie encounter can easily be solved through the method of stepping backwards and stabbing/shooting.
3. There is no reason to use any of the firearms in this game (other than for in-game achievements). In a game based on survival in the zombiepocalypse, there should emphasis on the importance and effectiveness of ammunition. Instead, every gun has the same effect and damage as a melee weapon up until sniper rifles are used.
4. That. Ending. Sucked.
A final complaint of mine is on a more personal note, and not necessarily a fault of the game. You removed one of the best things about TLS2, in which you have a time limit to get to your destination. I mean, you've got things like a day counter and a clock in the top right corner, but what for? You've taken away all of the importance of the objective, and that's just unfortunate.
All in all, this was a really good game. Once I got in, I never stopped until I reached the horrible conclusion to the story. There are flaws here and there, but I ultimately enjoyed my zombie-slaying experience, and will keep on killing zombies just for the sake it of.
