Well, my evening has had a turn for the melancholy
This is a rather sad game, once you think about it. Every item you get gives the world more color for both people, color representing happiness. The boy works himself to death to collect these items, subtly becoming more and more faded as the bits and bobs are returned. When the last one is returned, he dies, leaving nothing behind but his efforts, while his love is free to bask in the colors created by someone she never cared for.
Jesseblade74 put this into better words than I did, but as a story this is pretty good. Reminds me of Coma and a few others, but in making that comparison, I have to say the simplicity makes this a worse game overall.
Rather than simple fetching items, I would rather have seen actual puzzles. I would have enjoyed the scenery more if you slowly zoomed out as more and more of the colors were given to the world so as to draw attention to what was changing. Maybe little snipets of monolouge from the boy, expressing some kind of doubt about his actions, or possibly a lack of doubt.
Basically, the basic concept was pretty good, but little additions like I spoke of above would have made this game amazing.
Great Art, Bad Game
An art game consists of two pieces: Art and the game. Obvious so far.
This art game features splendid art. Everything from the music, over the basic art and the way the world gains color is absolutely stunning. It also features a "story" which allows much interpretation, also something that an art game has.
Game wise however, this submission is much worse. It features two basic components: A platformer and exploration. The platform component is absolutely dull. There is no difficulty, no new element of gameplay, nothing. The exploration part is also not very interesting. Unlike other exploration games all paths are open from the very beginning, thereby the only element of exploration is the question "What item will be retrieved next?"
Basically from the moment the first item is brought back, the rest of the game is already clear: I will retrive one item after the other, each time bringing back one color. Because of the lack of any surprising element and the uninteresting gameplay, the time needed to get to the end is actually painfully dull.
In my humble oppinion, art should always make the most out of the medium used. A film should have stunning visuals, a book should be well written. Art games should shine with good gameplay and make use of the interactivity that games offer. Otherwise one does need to use the game as a medium.
tl;dr: Splendid art, but makes no good use of the medium "game".
Although the premise is somewhat nice, as is the message depicted by the ending, the execution is lacking. This is like a giant fetch quest, aggravated by the character's sluggish and limited movement. I would've given it a higher score if finding presents came with a speed boost, but as is the game feels like a chore from start to end.
The game was a bit too simple and repetitive, and the story was somewhat predictable. It had a nice little story, nice music, and cute art though.
Wow and bleh...
Hard to comment. As a gamer, this was INCREDIBLY boring. No puzzles, no challenges, just go around and gather items and bring them to the center of the board. As an artist and art fan, the message is lovely. The symbolism feels a bit tired and cliched, though. Just overused, I suppose. I give it a sixish, because I think it's really a 5.something.
