Excellent, with quirks.

I loved it. The gameplay was fun, the story was intriguing, and the music was soothing.
With that said, the game in its entirety is a little tedious. It goes on a bit long and at times felt a little repetitive. Maybe faster and more intense fighting? I don't know, gameplay was enjoyable and ultimately that's all that matters.
But for this review I'll focus on what I assume you, the author, were focusing on, the story, it kept you playing and it kept you interested, so it was good. But it was also a little cheesy, what with the awkward blushing romance bits. Given the medium I can understand using mostly dialogue for character development, but it might've been nice for some in-battle story development or other charcters DOING things to show what they were about. And there was also alot of reliance on exposition for storytelling. When one character comes out with a secret it's fascinating. When literally everyone does, it's a little tiresome and
came off a little deus-exxy.
Bottom line is I recommend this game alot. It's fun, it's engrossing. Cheesy romance, interesting morality plays, heroic sacrifices, and a game to keep you occupied for a few hours.

EPIC

HOLY CRAP, MAN!

This was a WONDERFUL game! It had many of the old-school RPG elements that I remember spending way too much time in and I could not stop playing.

The battles were nice. Not too long, some variations without it becoming extra work, but not too similar to be tedious. Some more enemy and boss types might have been better, but given that this is a flash game I think there is no issue.

The leveling system was also very well done. The stats were complex enough to allow min-maxing and replay value in order to see what worked best, but simple enough that you could just read the explanations given in-game and eyeball it. The fact that your stats became worth less as you leveled allowed you to change your choices as you progressed. This also made your choices each level you gained slightly more important until they were the most important choices you would make.

The weapon systems were classic, and that's good. For fans of space shooters like Phalanx or Gradius you will be comfortable with the early weapons and how they work. You are not given upgrades during the battle, however, and you can always switch weapons at will. This allows you to try different weapons for different situations instead of being locked in or dependent on the last powerup. Also, the last few weapons were very innovative, and I found myself finding every opportunity to use them.

The ship system is basic, but it both complimented your stat choice and allowed you some breathing room if you had invested too heavily in one stat or another. Though your upgrades didn't reflect in the ship's sprite looking any different, the upgrades did become necessary and were very well set up.

Lastly, the story.

Fans of games like Phantasy Star or earlier Final Fantasy will enjoy the story a lot. The story is right in the middle between being a complex Japanese-style anime RPG story and a simple typical circular RPG story. It will reveal plot elements slowly, answer most of your questions, and give you options on how the story should proceed via your choices on who to interact with at the Cafe and others. The story, like all great RPGs, had an identifiable moral and feeling that you could attach to. Though the characters seemed a little too typical in the beginning, they fleshed out as time went on and you found respect for everyone, even your enemy, by the end.

All in all, this is certainly a 10. Not because it had the best story, or the best game systems, or even the best playing experience. It wasn't. Starwish didn't set out to become the next best Final Fantasy, and so the quaint and humble presentation it has fit perfectly together.

I HIGHLY suggest playing this game and dedicating a few days to complete it. And go for broke, do the hard mode. It's rewarding.

Congratulations xdanond, you made one HELL of a game.

More please.

this took me more than 1-2 days!

im in the jungle area and the maze seems hard (in the End of Time stage) it was funny when Swig thot of kicking as* and the cloud lurched over and he was like OH SHI-!!! lmao this game is just awesome its very anime like and I love that aspect, it has characters you may love like the lovable panda drunk/ or drinking panda/bear (i know not a bear) this game has cool rpg elements and upgrades i just wished lev up and getting moola was easier and having the typical 3 bombs or bomb upgrades that cancels out enemy attack/bullets including the bosses, the overdrive does very little damage but that mite be cuz of my (certain) low stats. very fun game i love it!! wish there's another and i wished this game wudn't end, it felt like playing final fantasy in a way. excellent story even tho its slightly miniature. very worthwhile!

I'm just happy i get to experience a game like this its not often you'd have a story development like this along with rpg + shooting in the game, whereas its just pvp/turn by turn battle like Final Fantasy. Plus I love shooting games like these. Hope you make another and I can't wait to see the ending!

HIGHLY Addicting.

This is my third day playing this, and I must say, I can't get enough of this! The storyline caught my attention and kept it in its gravitational for the longest time imaginable. I really wanted to just click "skip" every time another scenario was about to occur, I sit through the conversation and get a kick out of the jokes. I'm an experienced RPGer, so it never bored me whenever I had to sit through the long dialogue or grind my way to high lvls. All in all, GREAT work!

YOU!!!!

Should be arrested for making such an awesome, addicting, story detailed, time consuming, game ever to hit Newgrounds!

You deserve getting the Daily 1st place! Man so far only got two endings but from just those two alone, I can tell you put in a lot of effort into this game. First trying things in normal mode than going to hit it hard mode for the remaining goodies.

My only complaint would be the slow pace of the game, but that would be only after the first play through...

Sure this isn't a flash game? Feels more like I'm playing something from the PSP or something close to it.

Yes this game is AWESOMELY EPIC!
