Huh...
This presentation about meditation seems to have a much more solid groundwork, mostly from a buddhist point of view. Both under meditation and self hypnosis complete relaxation is key. Since you seem to know a little bit about this subject (I assume you've done it yourself at least a few times), I actually have a question.
I've mastered complete relaxation of most of my body except for one part, my lungs, and by extension my throat. Breathing doesn't seem to come naturally for me and when I completely numb my body, my minds focus shifts to that of my breathing. Is there any way to overcome this problem that you know of?
For the record, meditation is not the only way to obtain spiritual enlightenment, though it is by far the most universal and least personal approach. A good alternative could be immersing yourself into something you're comfortable with, which suits your unique way of thinking (let's face it we're all at least a little unique) I myself have used free writing to approach my own "soul-core" if you will to some extent. I assume others might use a similar approach through whatever suits them the best, be it physical activity, music or even solid logic.
The sky's the limit :oP
