Blastral is a danmaku "bullet hell" inspired shoot 'em up spanning over 4 levels with unique enemies and bosses.

Once again, thanks to all the people in the Newgrounds Audio portal for having such a wonderful collection of 8-bit gems.

The sound effects were made by HardPCM, http://hardpcmtechnologie s.blogspot.com/ and were downloaded from freesound.org.

Well done

Laregly easy for a Danmaku, but still one worth playing. The soundtrack in particular kept me going. Well made game we got here!

Great game, and the music aint bad either.

Im not that into to side scrolling shooters let alone bullet hell shooters, but I have played Ikaruga once or twice so I knew what I was getting into.

Obviously played on easy mode and still couldn't win, It is definately a game of concentration and pattern recoginition and I guess I'm just not good at that on the fly but I still had fun playing it. Also the level 4 boss creeped the ever lovin' shit out of me before raining sweet death upon me.

I appreciate you considering some of my music for the game and hope they enhanced the gaming experience... I know EF's boss battle did....

hmmm

Danmaku tastic thats for sure. Good difficulty, fluid controls, and great music makes this a must play. The design and contrast were great and the sound effects were perfect. On top of that, the enemy waves weren't monotonous.

a few personal peeves though. Some parts are ballbustingly difficult while other parts are easy. Also, i really dislike that I cant kill EVERY enemy, nor power up my gun. I understand the feel you were trying to go for but it made the game frustrating at times. And when I did get to hit things, they didn't always die right away. While yes, every enemy drops powerups. not all of them have to.

This is just my opinion. I figure a game like this isn't meant to employ all those mechanics nessisarily but they add a bit of variety and flavor to the gameplay.

A challenging, well made shmup

Neophyte-Robin hasn't played a bullet hell in his life, has he? Because complaining about the difficulty in them is just missing the point entirely. They're supposed to be challenging, not something you can play while "sitting back and relaxing". His entire review just reeks of "casual", really.

And Blastral isn't even that challenging as far as bullet hells go. Easy mode becomes a cakewalk once you figure out the enemy patterns, and normal mode doesn't have you repeating stages to the point of frustration either, but it's difficult enough to give you a proper challenge and a feeling of satisfaction when you do beat the game.

The game is all around good. Controls work great, the 8-bit look is pleasant, and the levels and bosses have some thought put into them. I don't find the lack of weapon upgrades to detract from the gameplay - in fact, I find the simplistic nature of it to complement the game perfectly. The only way to get more powerful in this game is to get better, and that's the way it should be in games like these.

The game has its flaws, though. It has a certain theme to it, what with the levels based on the four elements, but you've never given any context or backstory as to what the hell you're doing there anyway, and what significance the elements even have. Nor are some aspects ever explained - for example, the signs you collect throughout the game - they're absolutely fundamental for surviving till the end, and yet you might not even notice what they're for until quite some time into the game. Also, I'd rather you could go back to the main menu from the pause menu, because once you die a lot at some point, you know you'll want to restart the game because you'll have no way of beating it.

Overall, good, could be a lot better. A few simple fixes could make it a bit more "user-friendly", so to speak.

A solid bullet hell game

The gameplay is solid, though I feel the difficulty ramps up too quickly. Furthermore, making the enemies the same color as the background can make it confusing. In the future, you may consider adding more colors.
