After hearing on the news about this:
"...Father Riccardo Seppia, a 51-year-old parish priest in the village of Sastri Ponente, near Genoa, was arrested last Friday, May 13, on pedophilia and drug charges. Investigators say that in tapped mobile-phone conversations, Seppia asked a Moroccan drug dealer to arrange sexual encounters with young and vulnerable boys. "I do not want 16-year-old boys but younger. Fourteen-year-olds are O.K. Look for needy boys who have family issues..."

572million doesn't seem to be enough somehow - though it's wrong to blame the system they say. Actually - the system is at fault too (just thinking about the catholic one here for example). The evangelic christian church does allow marriage and well basically this does solve problems. Not all but it's a start.

Our pastor (evangelic) once told us his story. He was raised catholic and had started studying catholic religion in order to become pastor when he "one day got a sign from jesus.", you know what? He married... still married today.
Can't tell anything about that other religions that you guys over the great pond have but over here evrytime such a story comes to the surface all the media generally rage - doesn't seem to be the case in America though.
The uh method of tackling the theme certainly is a different one. Reminds me of that nongames about Korea. Why do they all seem to have the same layout (no speech whatsoever, just sound/music and a as minimalistic design finished of with a morale?)
Anyway - nice job there.

I have some questions...

Are you a Christian? Why are priests singled out in child sexual harassment cases? If anything shouldn't this be more general, like the fact you despise child molesters? Or is it the fact that they (priests) have taken an oath?

Your animation is dark, sickening, sad, and well presented. Good informative animation I will give you that.

To many horrible messages

although I agree with what you say directly, for the most part, at every turn you are casting blame without justification, take the part where apparently the priest was driven to do these atrocities by lust, completely false, there is only one person who made the priest act as he did, himself, not scantly clad woman, as you seem to imply, furthermore, HIV is just a disease, not some mark of evil, true, it is evil to act in the manner he did, especially with a STD, but you seem to be implying that that proves he is doing something, you do know that there are other ways to get HIV, right?
finally, although I see no real chance of redemption for such atrocities acts, we can not, and should not try to bar someone from redemption, no matter how ludicrously insane it may be, and by the time you are making such statements under the cross, you should know that. Forgiveness is available to all, that being said, I feel confident in saying that that is not going to happen, it could, but it won't, and if we forget that, how long will it be before people start labeling each other as heavens, and killing them? You know, like has happened regularly throughout recorded history? I'm not saying he is not horrible, but I am saying that because of that, we need to be better.

Eye opening.

I think the message it sent was somewhat powerful, however the facts that you had at the end were simply incredible. Just the fact that the church has gotten away with it so many times in America without facing any real repercussions is amazing. I have a few minor gripes though, I mostly had a problem reading all the text at the end. You could easily fix that by putting all the facts at the very end with the replay button. And I feel that the animation was a bit rough around the edges.
I know I'm not supposed to comment on other people's reviews, but JackofPojo it never said that the priest in the flash had HIV, AIDS, or any other disease. Second, the Catholic Church and the pedo's it employs do not deserve any more second chances, they've been fucked up for a long, long time. Just look at the Spanish Inquisition. Which brings me to my next point. You speak about people being called "Heavens" (Pretty sure you meant "Heathens", note the "th") So far the only ones who have labelled people as heathens and killed them for that reason has been the Catholic Church (Inquisition, Crusades, Dark Ages, the list frankly goes on and on). They aren't the only ones to kill large groups of people for being different, or "inferior" mind you, but the Catholic Church has quite the track record for commiting atrocities and getting away with them.

Nice work!

You show the world what most people don't see
...or don't wanna see.

I'm astonished by how much info you got on this video, but I do ask, do priest and etc, religious people still do this these days?
I also ask, why did people bring up diseases when it doesn't even mention a single thing about them in the animation?

Drawing Conclusions from Stats

I'm going to draw the following conclusions from the stats...which means it's subjective (my own opinion).

Homosexuality has been shunned by society as a whole for the past few centuries. That doesn't mean homosexuals didn't exist, though. Some may have been struggling with it, made to feel ashamed or repressed due to family and societal pressures, and felt throwing themselves into a life of servitude with God could somehow help "cure" them or manage their "problem". Some may have high sexual urges, but due to their upbringing were conditioned to be ashamed of sex. Some may be pedophiles, again, trying to turn to God in the hopes that a severe service will some how "cure" them.

This could be likened to someone that has psychological issues becoming a psychologist / psychiatrist ... they do so not to help others, but because they're looking for anwers for themselves.

I'm drawing this conclusion from a) there being a higher stat of boys molested than girls, and b) the fact that sexual molestation occurs, and c) we hear about children being molested, but not older people, like prostitutes or age-of-consent adults.

Priests can fap in private if the need gets bad enough, so there's obviously something more at play here than just sexual release. So, for some reason they choose to become a sexual predator. I'm thinking, like you showed, it's like steam building until it blows the pressure valve, and before they know it they're going against vows.

I don't think all priests are pedophiles by nature...I think some become pedophiles by circumstance. IE: their situation makes them a pedophile although they'd rather not, simply b/c it's easier to coax a child to keep its mouth shut rather than a hooker or an older person.

The stats weren't clear on whether the victims were that age when they were molested, or that age when they finally stepped forward. I'm thinking some of those 12-15yo's were perhaps molested at younger ages, but decided to step forward later on. Is that incorrect assumption?

The concept of a priest is very flawed, too. We are all human, and we know humans are sometimes flawed individuals, depending on how they're judged and by what criteria. The idea of a priest being someone that can take vows to be "better than human" and expect them to be almost robotic in that sense, is severely flawed. IE: to take a vow of celibacy, especially during their early manhood when the hormones can short-circuit the brain. It's great that the folks making up the religion can fantasize about an idealistic version of humans, but in doing so they neglect the very things that make us human: our desire to procreate. The best human quality is not in denying something or shutting it off, but in accepting it and learning to cope with it. Expecting priests to just shut off their sexual desires is basically like turning your back on a problem and acting like it doesn't exist; it doesn't help deal/cope with it.

The other aspect of this is that many religions have turned into beauracracies, and folks get higher up the chain not based on piety, but who they know and what deals they make with man, not God. Much like our political leaders, many have skeletons in their closets that would shame them if they came out. In some sense, by making someone feel they have to be better than human, some can start to feel they are better than human, and "above the law" in a sense.

Sexual Opression

When you suppress sexuality it comes back out as perversion, this is one of the psychological issues with religion in that when you try and hide or cover up anything within human nature then nature has a way of rebelling. Anything oppressed comes back out as something disgusting. Priests, anti-gay preachers (who end up admitting to being gay or once gay)... or any religious oppression.

Great animation and good thought provoking stats and imagery.

It's About Time!

Finally, somebody has the guts to make a statement about this. We need more people willing to speak out about the ongoing problem of religions turning people into weirdos and perverts.

(If anybody has an issue with what I said, don't let it in any way be affected by the fact that I did no research whatsoever before publicizing my thoughts.)

All right.

Animation is a bit clunky, not that great to look at. The story is short and awkwardly put together. Still, powerful message. This is definitely something people need to pay more attention to.
It's worth noting that there are about ten times as many cases of pedophilia in public schools than churches. Just something to think about.

Ive heard of this and lucky for me, i don't go to church. Also random fact: Men with an active sex life normally live beyond 80 yrs old.

im the averageuser.. never reviewing anything... but this will be promotef!!!!

Priests are pedophiles like Muslims are terrorists.

The animation was decent, but the message is going to mislead a lot of people that have likely never even been to a church into seeing it as a hostile environment where they're liable to get raped in the confessions room.

Rated 2 / 5 stars

yeah... I'd have to agree with Acoustatic a little, not every priest is bad or whatever. But, I don't know why, I was expecting this to be a bit humorous...

Rated 2 / 5 stars

Totally agree with Acoustatic.

Do I condone paedophila by priests? Course not.
Do I think there's an epidemic of paedophile priests? Pfffff no!

I loooove it when Flashes give stats right before the end.
Like 4,392 priests accused of engaging in sexual abuse of a minor between 1950 and 2002. Information pulled straight from Wikipedia.

That's 52 years, and 4% of the ordained priests.

What stuff did you omit from the Wikipedia article?
Something about the allegations being credible for 1671 priests.
BUT HEY, 4392 is a bigger number than 1671, AMIRITE?

I love how you included the titbit about 81% of the allegations being made by boys. For shame on those homosexual paedophiles! That's the straw that broke the camels back!

The animation itself - lame, overused message with some clunky animation. Great use of the tear from Jesus' eye, this overused symbolism seems appropriate for a Flash with a *ahem* message.

Rated 5 / 5 stars

:( wHAt kind of priest

would understand that a crazy person to do that to children, but a priest who swear before God is a bastard, youre right dude and your animation is good, this world has become madness

Rated 2 / 5 stars

Gonna have to agree with Acoustatic

True, I understand the point you are trying to get across here, but you're giving a bias example. The quoting of all the numbers makes it seem like such a large majority, when in fact its really quite small. Not condemning your flash, but you should at least put a disclaimer instead of commenting about it. You can't take out your anger on a flash that could deceive lots of people.
With a title like that, I was expecting it to be more comedic. And the art wasn't exemplary either, so this score isnt purely based on theme.

Rated 2.5 / 5 stars

81% male

We all know it's usually boys. That's why I'm wondering why the priest is staring at girls in this flash.

The style and anime were as... We can tell you're a starting, but you're off to a good start.

I'm not going to question any info put into this, because I really don't know or care. I'm just grading the plot and anime.

Well I found this to be a sadly accurate flash, many priests are likely guilty of this yet only very few are ever brought to light because the kids when they are younger don't understand at the what is happening to them and why the priest should not be engaging in sexual intercourse with them. Found this to have a happy ending where he went to jail for molesting many young children too.

Sad how he kind of snapped one day and decided he would start forcing children to have sex with him a lot. For a bit more accuracy I think you should have had a few guys that he was staring at, at the school as well since when it starts you depict him as only having done females up until the end where he drags a young boy and girl into his room at the church.

Ended happily though for the victims, most of them right?

The animation was very well done with this piece. You did a nice detailed job of showing the priest starting and then finally just mentally snapping and becoming highly unstable. I wonder why it took so long for the church goers to figure it all out.

The music used was completely fitting since it sounds like music that would play for someone who is getting ready to snap or possibly die in a movie and such.

Overall, nice accuracy, sad real life story.

Hard hitting, well chosen piece of music to go along with this particularly thorny issue - the majority of these priests who have offended are still out there teaching. Some of them completely escaped without people finding out what has happened at all.

Yes, it produces a poignant political and religious stirring within people and I think that would still be the case if you didn't produce the "trouser tent" behind the cassock. Just as a point of clarification, the priest would have worn a white overcoat over the black, while conducting mass.

Cold hard facts have settled in here, just for the US, but that's still a staggering amount of offences, victims, perpetrators and compensation payouts.

I do believe that there is a cover up by the Catholic church and it's not only kept to places like the US, but it's all over the world. Sadly, as the church only answers to the Pope, they won't be held accountable truly until he decrees it that the church will deal with the issue themselves and come clean.

I guess it's enough said about the religious dimensions of your flash in the other comments. I just want to add, I am christian. Evangelic, not catholic, but that doesn't matter that much to me since we both believe in the same God.
I like the rather modern evangelic church service as well as the more traditional catholic one, and I like to visit both kind of divine service, specially on Easter.

As I understand it, your flash doesn't attack the faith in God in any way, nor the church itself. What makes you angry, and what you blame here, is child molesting under the cloak of the church. And you have all the right in the world to be angry about that! There is no defense in world for this shameful behavior!

You earned my highest respect for making this flash. Instead of simply ignoring these events (not only those in Genua) you use your creativity to create a meanigful flash. Especially in these days, the world - or at least Newgrounds - needs more canny flashes like this here and less insignificant random movies like so many others, not only here, everywhere in the Internet.

Substance should always have a higher standing then style, your flash follows that rule AND unite both elements in a great way, and that is why - at least in my eyes - your flash is so important!

Rated 5 / 5 stars

Something that needed to be said.

I feel like you stated something that everyones' been ignoring these past years. The Chuch has been weakening, and well, maybe the priests(in their defense) feel like they are lost now. Most people don't go to church where i live, and they feel a loss of purpose.

I like the flash, good job : )
