Author Comments

One day, while you're testing a level for a developer friend of yours, you accidentally discover a hidden world inside the game. Alphaland is the story of exploring that world.

Arrow keys or WASD to move
Up/W/X/Space to jump

[Alphaland is a minimalistic platformer. It's pretty straightforward to play, so I'd rather not say too much and let you explore it yourselves. I hope you enjoy it!]

Phenomenal

Lots of art games show up on Newgrounds, and not all of them are good. Some have poor level design, which hampers their overall message and it's delivery. Others lack a good message to complement a design.

Occasionally, one comes along that makes you think, creates emotions where none existed before. A game like this.

I would never have expected to emphasize with a fictional anthropomorphic game, but you have managed to pull this off perfectly. Superb job.

Seriously...

''The point of an "art" game is not to produce something fun, but to produce a game that makes people think''.

What does this even mean? That a game cannot be considered bad or boring just because they were done bad or boring on purpose? As much as I love art games, this ''2deep4u'' mentality is really hurting them. We know that the point of art games is to express a message, but too many people are taking that as some sort of license to produce gameplay-lacking crap which you just can't downvote, lest you wanna draw the flock of commentors saying ''you just don't get it''.

A good art game should have both the ability to be enjoyable and to make people think. As Roger Erbert said, ''It's not what a movie's about, but how it's about it''.

That being said, this game isn't bad. It's just that there isn't anything too special about it. It has a creepy vibe and the controls are excellent, but it doesn't have any truly inspired moments (except at the end and the ''3rd jump is super jump'' part) and the messages come out as pretentious more than anything. It's an average platformer, as I said, nothing too special about it.

This is a very touching game.

...and to anyone who voted low: The point of an "art" game is not to produce something fun, but to produce a game that makes people think.

If this concept is too much for you to handle, then just DON'T play art games and DON'T drag the score down out of spite. The rest of us can flag your reviews as abuse and get you banned, you know.
