If the controls don't work at all, please click on the game screen first. An update that fixes this issue is on its way, but it needs to be approved by NG first.
Other than that - the arrow keys need to be held down. Once you get older, your avatar moves slower and the keys need to be held down for a little longer to make him move.
Button tapping pointless, keeping button pressed super effective.
I hope this clears some things up, I guess it wasn't as intuitive as I thought (sorry about that, i guess).

After many tries and a ton of cursing your game I finally got that 14x Combo Achievement!
That was truly hard... anyway
Good game and kinda downed me when it put all the quotes up about that decisions you let slip away...
