Full RPG Experience

I played the first two EBF games, but I'm still extremely impressed with this third in the series. This is a full RPG in itself, and more polished than many commercial products you see nowadays - I could easily see this being ported to another platform a la Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers.

The silliness and anime/internet humor jokes blended well with the stylized art, backgrounds that have been a mainstay of the first two EBF games - all the moreso because you now have more freedom to 'explore' and control the pace a little more. The game's mechanics are intuitive - the time to learn how forging, skill levelling, etc worked is extremely short.

Perhaps most notable is that this game offers an actual CHALLENGE without being impossible - something relatively rare in most games these days. When the game gets harder you dont feel the 'no human can beat this' style of difficulty, but rather 'I see how this works and I nearly got it, just need to do better.' I played through Hard and have not yet started on Epic, but knowing how to change your equipment around for elemental/status resistances was definitely key.

There are very few points in this game that I feel merit critique:
1) No means to remove poison from enemies that ABSORB poison - I would like to see the ability to use 'items' on enemies. Aside from the obvious (garlic clearing enemy poison), it would open up fun possibilities of damaging some enemies - i.e. undead hurt by heal items, 'vegetarian' enemies poisoned by meat, carnivores debuffed by veggies, feed hamburgers to fat enemies to make them die... etc.

2) No means to remove your whole teams' debuffs en masse - You have to counter each debuff with a corresponding buff. This is particularly annoying for buffs you can only apply one at a time - temper/bless/lockon. Could make a food item that does this if you wanted to add it without adding a skill; green tea pot perhaps, something cleansing?

3) The Auto-life granted by Revive is not part of the skill description - I figured it out by accident when I cast genesis and saw the halo appear on living party members. I dont know if this is intentional, but I think it should be added to the description - especially since coffee doesn't have a corresponding effect. I'd like to see a 'cappuccino' item that corresponds to a higher-level revive, too - possibly also being capable of casting auto-life, so that you could conceivably put it on the whole team in a round.

I only really had extended trouble with two enemies - the cosmic monolith and the final boss Akron (remember, I played on hard).

The monolith at first I misunderstood its description - I thought that it really WAS impossible to damage, and that there was some trick to killing it. It wasn't until I tried a combination of lockon and bind that I could really touch it.

Beating Akron involved two tricks - restarting him until he had several of the same element (reducing his attack types so I could outfit the whole team the same way) and AVOIDING killing his claws so no cosmic monoliths come out; those are NASTY. I also let him summon two of the skull ghosts in the worm/tail slots, and then kept them dispelled and never killed them - made that part of the battle much easier.

I really want to see what's on the other side of Death... but I'm currently missing three medals - epic game victory, skeleton minigame medal 2, and some secret medal - the one above Artist on the in-game Medal screen, or to the right of Blacksmith on the NG screen. The skeleton minigame is quite challenging... almost excessively so, but I know it's doable.

In terms of medal counts, it IS possible to get each area's medal quota in a single playthrough, excepting the last - I tended to get each while I was still in the area, which was quite helpful.

tl,dr:

This game gets a 10 from me - it's a microcosm of everything enjoyable about RPGs, and polished to the point where I cannot find any major flaws. Very well done.
