The official music video for "The Faster the Treadmill" by I Fight Dragons!

I began work on this shortly after completing Grumatorium, and it was a pretty intense project. The band utilizes a lot of game controllers and NES era material into their music and performances so I approached this video from a similar perspective, starting by designing and animating gameplay from a fictional 8-bit game that the video would take place in.

The result was "the Adventures of Puddlenaut," in which a shark-armed diver hero does battle with deep sea creatures in order to mine mystical power crystals that are abundant in the underwater kingdom. The main grunt enemies, one of which is the protagonist of the video, were modeled after drowned fetuses since I couldn't find any deep sea creatures to fit the image I was looking for. Thus I ended up calling the main character "Fetusaur" throughout production.

Love the design, but...

It looks like this was all hand-drawn. Nice.

Yeah, the overall idea is good, but it doesn't seem to have a good, constant correlation with the song. It was fun watching the cute little guy trying to get around in the game, and the transitions between 8-bit and 3d (along with those references) made it more interesting, but there were only small areas in the animation that were directly related to the song. The animation seemed to jump from song to an "on-its-own" feel and back several times, making it hard to follow what is actually going on and if it was a music video.

Bottom line: it looks very good but it wasn't executed as I expected it to be. Maybe a little more focus on the song would have had this a 9 or 10, but I'm stuck at rating this a 7 or 8.

The animation is wonderful, but even if is sucked, you'd get MASSIVE points for your amazing taste in music. I love IFightDragons! 10/10 5/5

Great animation!

Did you use flash to animate? It looks like it was all drawn by hand and then just the rest taken care of using a computer.

Really good either way.
