A must for any old school gamer
This. Is. Awesome.
You get to play a reasonably accurate remake of Super Mario Bros., right down to the sluggish and aggravating controls, but in addition to Mario, you get to do it with your choice of half a dozen well known characters from other video games, with many of their familiar powers and moves. And some with additional powers as you collect mushrooms and fire flowers.
Obviously, some of the characters are just plain better than others. Link's sword and Simon's whip are perfectly suited for killing Zelda and Castlevania monsters, respectively, but their short range and slow speed aren't very effective for hoardes of faster paced turtles and mushrooms. Samus and Megaman have maneuverability advantages in the form of their morph ball and slide, respectively, and long range weaponry, making them clear front runners. Billy from Contra is there, too, kicking ass and taking names. If you don't like a character, or find one better suited for a level than another, you get to choose a new one every time you die, and between every level. So jump around, have fun, and enjoy some nostalgia.
My only two gripes might be that first, even the dinkiest of enemies take three or four hits to kill. That really makes life hard if you've chosen a character that needs to get close to something to kill it, and it really makes life tedious if your progress is slowed to a crawl while you have to shower a group of enemies with a dozen bullets before you can move on. Second, it's 2010 now. I don't think anybody would have complained if the animation and control were upgraded just a little bit from the frustrating days of 8-bit gaming systems. Walking and jumping are just a little slow when most gamers would rather occupy the majority of their time killing and breaking things versus walking between things to kill and break.
But really. This is pretty darn awesome. Especially if you're part of the age group that played all of the games involved.
cool idea an all braw but with simon you can't hit jump and a direction which sucks. you have to be running in a direction you want then hit jump...pretty sure thats not how it was in old castlevania. And in mario world it makes some jumps next to impossible.
since when does samus have green hair?
and why do u lose all upgraded, and not just degrade one?
apart from that, this game is good.
(here come the thumbs down -_- )
The title says all, the game is awesome. Great idea and the game runs smoothly and the audio just... Ah, the nostalgia!
The only downside is that the characte get stuck after walkin straight in a while, but nothing that cant be repaired.
Anyway, fell yourself manly-hugged man. You are awesome.
Commendation for excellent integration of so many features while maintaining the original feel.
Except for Simon. He controls and plays like a bloated pig being towed behind a pickup truck.
