great idea but bad character balance

i liked being able to try classic mario levels (that you reproduced quite well) with characters from different games.

to see what can be done differently or how to get past obstacles with the character's strengths and weaknesses.

however, the power balance between those characters and Mario is a bit unfair.

they all require over 3 attacks just to kill a Goomba, let alone any other enemy. yet they can destroy bricks in a couple of attacks. in fact, Simon can utterly rape columns of bricks just by throwing an axe at it.

but a Goomba? nosiree, they can take abuse you never thought possible from Bowser's lowly cannon fodder.

they don't even have the luxury of a life bar like in their original game (except Bill from Contra). so technically, they're weaker than every enemy in the game.

plus, some of the jumping puzzles were clearly designed for Mario's abilities (his sprint, for example) so the other characters have no way of getting past without quarter-second timing since they can't just brute speed their way past like Mario can (and like was probably intended).

this is especially obvious with the melee fighters like Link and Simon, who don't have the luxury of range to compensate their weak damage.

basically, their lack of offensive power is not compensated by anything. and their original performance, while good for intuitive handling, is not always suited to the game's nature (let's face it, Mario Bros. is not an action or exploration game but an almost pure platformer)

the last point is mostly a personal gripe. why isn't Link in his Zelda 2 full-size body? just wondering.

Hah, awesome!

Seriously well done! I'm going to have hours of fun with this.

For the NES feeling of the game, you have it perfectly and the controls are really well replicated. I can understand this took you a very long time to complete and mad props to you for having completed this project. I'll be looking for your future projects should you have more in store for us. =)

Again, I tip ze hat off for you.
