This is an rpg/platformer hybrid like the Castlevania games on the DS, which is something I've never seen in Flash before so I decided to spend a lot of time and effort making one in Flash. It was a pain in the butt at times to get something this complex working in Flash, especially since I had relatively little experience with Actionscript when I started, so I hope you all enjoy it. The controls are explained in the "Help" section on the main menu and also by the soldier in the starting area, but here they are for further convenience:

Up Arrow - Jump
Down Arrow - Talk, go through doors or windows, etc.
Left and Right Arrows - This should be obvious
X - Attack
C - Hold down to charge magic, then release when bar at bottom left is flashing to cast
Z - Go to next dialog page when talking to someone
F - Use carbonated fruit punch (Restore HP)
G - Use green tea (Restore MP)
H - Use holy ward (Remove curse)
Space - Open status window
Esc - Close status window
1 thru 6 - Change selected magic spell (Can change any time)
Q thru U - Change equipped weapon (Only in status window)

If you're cursed, you can't attack with your weapon, so use a holy ward, cast anti-curse, or find a Zenu statue as soon as possible. You can break baskets and flower pots for items that restore HP or MP or give you money.

The game is automatically saved every time you enter a new area (when you touch an arrow post or go through a door).

If you can't figure out how to get past a certain area, just ask in the comments and I'll help you out. Remember that you need to use spells to get through certain obstacles.

Good, but flawed

Solid RPG platform gameplay. It definitely makes up for the lack of graphics. The whole game is actually a really good make. Good depth and game length and certainly none too shallow. However, good gameplay alone does not propel this far enough as it is eclipsed by several flaws.

I have several very small but personal issues with this thing. Firstly, I would definitely like an in game mute button for the music. It started to really drive me nuts after a while. Secondly was the dual button for the inventory screen. Why? Why not just spacebar again to close it? It's a small thing, but it's rather annoying and it's so much more intuitive to make it the same button. I also found the walk speed a tad too slow for this. With the amount of space to traverse sometimes it takes a little too long.

Speaking of space, I think teleport points are a little too far away. Or if you think they aren't, there certainly needs to be some kind of 'checkpoint' or 'respawn point' available for major areas when you get there. It's kind of tedious to traverse all that space all over again.

To make that matter worse, at some point I think you got a little too repetitive with the area design. I mean, every single screen from the Oasis to the School was exactly the same. Exactly, with the exact same screen, and the exact same enemies. I get the feeling you merely copied that screen 5 times over. It's dull.

Last little irk is the backgrounds. While there are subtle differences between what terrain can be passed through and what terrain is solid, it's too subtle. The background and platforms need to be much more defined so that players can easily identify what terrains mark a solid barrier and which ones don't. The light colour difference just doesn't do it for me.

Lastly, I think monsters should provide some drops. There are certain stretches of levels that have no jars whatsoever and there could certainly be some drops from monsters. Why not make it random? Like a certain percentage chance that a monster or jar drops items.

It's a good game, but I think the flaws take away from the experience a tad.

That was a good review, thanks for the helpful feedback. I agree with most of what you said, so I'll keep these things in mind when I go to work on the next one.

Awesome

This is way beyond a beginner actionscript programmer's level. Way to go!

OMG WOW!!

I hardly write reviews but this is REALLY GOOD!! This is really impressive, I have been trying to get this style of gaming system down for weeks, You have quite a bunch of glitches, regardless it's still pretty fun. I got bored really quick after dieing 2 times, I couldnt even level up to level 2. something is wrong with the health system. Donno, but I really like this. I will go back to it later on and finish it.

Great! But...

while you're talking, you can still move around. After a while, the music gets annoying. I think there needs to be a mute button. Lastly, It seems like it is far too easy to level up. Other that that, great job.
