This is the story of Katan, a little aztec critter who works as a stonemason on huge pyramid projects. He's an eager, talented employee who beleives strongly in what the project stands for, putting in endless overtime to get things done.

When a less committed, self-serving employee hatches a plan to steal the soul jewel of the temple, the mysterious crystal skull, Katan finds himself under blame and attack from the very monument he helped to create.

I started making this toon November 2008 and finally exported it in January 2010.
Various delays, injuries, graduations and jobs made it hard to focus on for a lot of the time- but it is fairly safe to say that it took a year to make... Which also accounts for the style changes and quality progression evident throughout the four mins of play time ;)

Thanks for watching- and thanks again to Newgrounds for letting me upload such large movie files

Great Movie...

I absolutely adore this movie. The visuals, story line, and characters were all fabulously done. My only complaint is why are people zero voting this down? It deserves to have a 4.7 or so ranking which it did until people started voting zero like douche bags simply b/c it has the highest score. Shame on you all.

Pretty darn good

Let's start with the good. The animation is really sweet. Some parts don't look entirely well. Katan running doesn't look like he's actually really "running", if you get what I mean. But the other's work very fine.

The story concept is pretty good. You don't really put much into Katan though. Imagine if you couldn't write that little description about your movie. Then it wouldn't be as a huge turnaround as you'd intend it to be. Katan doesn't seem to like his temple thing THAT much, because you don't put much into it. You have to make him look as if he really LOVES it, with his etire heart and soul, that having to fight against and destroy what he's built is more gut-wrenching than it actually is and a harder choice he has to make. Yes, you know that he likes his temple, but the audience doesn't. Make them know by showing them in the film. Otherwise Katan looks like just another worker there who has to get out of the temple alive and get back that jewel.

I have to say though, the rest of it is great. Katan dying to save the artifact drives a little nail through your heart. It doesn't tear your heart apart, but it evokes enough emotion, with the build-up to the story. Character design ain't that bad either. Work a little into the art direction. Colours there look a bit stale, and it would be nice to have a vibrancy of colours to bring out moods. The beginning sequence of the people building the temple is pretty thoughtful. It would definitely be better if the actions were more in time to the music. Sometimes in animation, you can use the actions to support the background music, instead of always the background music support the animation. The opening sequence in Prince of Egypt is a brilliant example.

All in all, I think it's a great piece of work. All it lacks from a 10 is that edge. That little bit of extra bite and emotion and finishing that makes it an excellent piece.
