Right foot
Starting off on the right foot dates back to mideval times (correct me if I'm wrong), and it was customary for them to believe that entering a room was meant to start with the right foot! Otherwise, the left foot would just be bad luck. In order to make sure people would do so, the king hired ''footmen''.
So to say that you've started on the wrong foot would literally mean that you've entered a room with the left foot or that you will see misfortune!
